Hey, I just read an old thread concerning the steering popping on 2001 models and the recal. I have had the same problem, except mine is a 2000. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a U-joint. I can't imagine why, but the mechanic at the dealer refused to just change out the U-joint. He wants to replace the entire steering collum for 1450.00$, yea, that much (needless to say I told them to go to hell). My extended warrenty covers this part, but they will just cover the U-joint replacement, not the entire steering collum. My question is this, where is the U-joint, can I replace it myself, and is it an easy fix or is it rather complicated to get to? Thanks for the help!

Well Ed my truck is popping from the front driver side ball joints. I just had to replace the spindle (lond story). The ball joints which were probably already weak weakened even more. So now im going to replace them with the moog ball joints. I have a 2001 but the joints are only for 99 and older. People have put them on their trucks with now problem.

The dealer said it was not the ball joints (thought I might just replace them anyway), it is good to hear it is easy to do (I did not look in my Chilton's guide yet), now comes the hard part, where on earth do I find the replacement parts, I tried NAPA and they don't cary them, same with parts america, does anyone know how much they cost....

Well, here was the concensus. I called the Dodge home office this morning, the recall was literally a day short. It seems my truck did not meet the recall specs becuase it was produced on the same line, but a day later (the next months run). I think that this is bull-you know what, same line and everything...Ow well, I took it to an independant mechanic and they said the ball joints were just about to go, so hopefully the dealer was just trying to get money out of me. I already voiced a complaint to AAA and the Dodge home office, AAA said they have had issues with this dealer before (even though they are five star). Dodge just said they would "look into it." I just might spend the extra cash and replace them with MOOG joints instead of factory POS. Thanks for all the help.

Thats the thing Ed you will spend less for the moog joints. F u c k dealerships and their little games they play. The once told me they couldnt honor my warrenty because I changed the spark plugs. Yeah right ha.

Yea, sounds like the dealer wanted to screw you on that deal too. I think the independant shop wanted 550.00 for parts labor, etc, for all four ball joints. Looks like I will have them ordered, but I would love to see if this recall comes through and get them replaced for free.

The Moog ball joints are great for the price....however, I highly recommend Spicer ball joints. Dakotas and Durangos have bad, non-servicable ball joints from the factory. Spicer has put effort into looking at the specific problem associated with Dakotas and Durangos. The ball joints are usually around $60.00 each. I can guarantee you, you will not be disapointed!!!
In our shop, this is pretty much the only company we use, unless it is a specialty application. Spicer, Amsoil and BG products are really worth the money!!

Thanks for the advice, all I have heard of was the MOOG's. I will have to look into Spicer parts and see if they are available here.

Randall, they probbly greased the U-joints. A guy told me that sometimes this lessens the popping and noise from the front end. I could be way off here, but it is a possibility. Anyhow, Dodge has a 1-800 number for their customer support. I do not have the number with me right now, but give me till lunch and I should be able to run out to my truck and find it for you.
