Hey.

I have a 1993 3.9 l that is very noisy when cold or damp outside. It seems the engine coughs, sputters, spurts and barely stays alive. Sounds like golf balls in a 45 gallon drum.
When it's warm, I don't have this problem. It seems to occur below 1500-2000 rpm. I have looked at the timing chain, cap & rotor, plugs, wires, tune up. All the usual suspects. I really need help!! I have sunk over $1700 into this one problem and not found a solution.....
Anybody....?

check your EGR system,

A leak on the valve bolted to the manifold will
do that

Small leak on the belly pan on the bottom of the
intake manifold will also do that.

Thanks.

I'm sure I've looked at the EGR valve. Here in Canada we have strict emmisions testing we have to conduct on our vehicles and that EGR valve was addresses then. Jesus, we gotta do a test every two years and pay the govn't $35 to do it. Can you say.... cash grab...!

Anyhow, I'm thinking it's the gear / shaft that is between the distributor and the oil pick up....
I had this changed three years ago. (Mind you when it went the last time, it went all at once.)
My mechanic said there is alot of play in this gear.

In your experiance, is this common...? Cuz, that's twice in three years for me...!
