Well I put a 180 degree thermostat in this past summer and havent had any codes until recently.. Is this the cause? its in the high 30's here and im starting to run my heater more a more regular basis is this the cause? Im gonna reset the computer tommorow and clear the code to see if it will pop up agian. AM i killing my truck by running it to cold? is this bad for my little 3.9??

Whoa..Whoa little? Have a little more confidence there hehe. You mean powerful V6 Magnum? Any Magnum engine (92+) is gonna have some real power!

Message: Well put that up to those Ram SRT-10s.... That 5.9L is tiny compared to the 8.3L Viper V10 and there's only a couple hundred hp difference there. It's all a matter of perspective... don't compare a V6 to a V8. Of course, it'll be little. Compare it to the other V6s. Personally I think it's a great engine for only being a V6.

Message: Yes it is bad,
The running to cold to long will put your computer
in a limp mode and it will run off set tables and
not the best it can. It will effect performance
and gas mileage
I also ran into the same thing last winter with
the 180 thermo, what you can do is block part
of the rad off with a piece of cardboard so it
heats up faster and runs at a sligltly higer temp
The computer is looking for at least 170 degrees
you may also have a thermo that is opening just
a little to soon.
That is what happend to me last year at 30 degrees
I changed out the thermo to another 180 that I
checked in some water and a thermometer the one
was open at 180 and the new one just started to
open at 180, I have run in below 20 degree weather
this year with no prob.

Message: Concerning p01281 replacing the ECT located behind the alternator fixed our problem. Check &
see if yours is a one or two wire sensor. Hope this helps.

Message: Use a regular stant 195 it will run 185 the stock
thermo is a metered flow a full flow 180 is a bad
idea in colder areas
The 1 wire sensor behind the alt is the guage
sender
on the other side of the thermo housing the 2
wire sensor is the engine temp to computer sensor
and the code is running to cold to long not
taking to long to warm up its looking for
170 or more
running below at least 180 is not good causing
sludge build up

Message: Do any of ya'll ever let your cars warm up before you drive them? If so and its really cold outside and you let it warm up for an excessive amount of time, (ex. more then 15min.) then this also could set the "too cold for too long" code. This is especially true for vehicles with low temp rating thermostats. Try to clear the code first and don't let it warm up as long on the cold mornings before you rack your brain and start spending money.

Message: my 03 Dakota, unexpectedly died. Runnning the
diagnostic came up with a couple codes. PO133 (bad 02
sensor) PO442 (small vap leak) and P1281. I had a
problem with overheating and temporarily removed the
thermostat. I has since gotten colder here in New
England. Could any of these codes cause the engine to
shut down and not want to restart?? I didn't blank
the codes. Need help, love my truck, just hit 200,000
and it's been good to me. Not ready to put her out to
pasture just yet
