YES ... they do make an automatic
NO ... it is no good for even on road

The V6 3.9L engine at 176 HP is way to underpowered to get you out of any trouble. There is no low end torque. The truck is good, but stay away from the engine.

If you take a stock struck and add big tires you need to change the gear ratios.
If you don't then you end up with a pig.
The best choice is to change to a ratio that is slightly more than it should be and you will come up with a good performer.
They will always say a V8 is better but then you will always be paying for it in poor gas milage.

BS ... the new RAM 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi gets 17.3 L/100 km (13.5 miles/gallon) with 330 HP and 450 lb/ft of torque compared to the Dakota at 17.1 L/100 km (13.75 miles/gallon) at 176 HP and no torque.

My Dak has NEVER got 13.75 miles to the gallon!
The worst I have EVER had was just under 16 mpg.
And that was driving no farther than 5 miles for the whole tank full!
I get 22 on the highway.
Try that in a Hemi gas pig. LOL
The Hemi will be faster but never better at gas milage.
Actually Larry's Dak will beat a Ram Hemi in both milage and performance!

I have a 4 inch body lift on my Dak, its a 97 4x4 V6 and a jump 4.0L ^cyl got stuck in the mud puddle, that I went through without any problems, i was using 33's and he was using 35s.

Yes it was an automatic. and yes they are fun for offroading, if they wasn't then I wouldnt see so many people taking them off road, and using them to pul jeeps out of the mud, but that is only from expirence on my part:( go figure Mr. "Garth"

Yes my Dak is faster than the stock hemi truck, I
have not run it yet but side by side I would say
its running high 14's my Dak is in the mid 14's
but I stuck $6000 in the motor about the same I
will be spending on the hemi the intercooled
Kenny Bell that is not ready yet KB gave me
a price of $4900, that includes a diff computer
also

The hemi gets 18 to 19 on the highway and the
mods to the truck will be starting soon

It will be between 500 to 600 HP and should easily
be in the low 13's high 12's

KB claims right now 530hp with his S/C

Hers some pics of the beast
http://www.exc40.com/hemi

They are claiming 20% better mileage on the hemi
with just headers and a cold air setup that
would put it very close to the Dak in mileage and
with just those mods I would say it will beat my
stroked Dak

My stroked and ported Dak 3.9 gets 22.36 last
highway check and will do mid 14's right now
but I do plan on a blower on there also

You see an old retired guy like me with bad
artritis has nothing better to do than play with
his trucks, just like a little boy only my toys
are bigger and weigh more LOL
