Just a question,

one of my buddies has got an older ford bronco,
and he took out the powersteering pump and claims that he picked up a couple free HP from it.

I just wanted to get yalls thoughts on this. Is it practical to do in a dak? Also if it is, i wonder how much HP you would free up in you took off the fan one also and replaced it with an electric one.

now you know thats..................

the power steering pump runs off the engine, so it puts excess drag on the engine makin it a lil harder to turn so takin it off will free up some hp, but of course, it will be harder to steer espcially off road. so ya win some n ya lose some, its all jus about where you usually drive and how much you wanna try to turn the wheel, its all personal preferance. Judging by his profile pic he won't need power steering

...new tires maybe...

It appears to me, he likes driving in a straight line.

The fan removal and going to an electric will
give you about 10 extra ponies and you can
notice it on the low end more than anything.

Mine has been gone for years now

Power stearing, mine is staying right where it is
might give you 5 but I am not that hard up.

If you want to also build the musles in your arms
while you drive go for it

lol,

I used to drive an 89 mazda 4banger and it
had no power steering. I usally dont do any
off roadin, except maybe after a 12 pack in
the woods with my redneck "ford fans" friends.

But other then that, I just dont think i am hard
up enough like larry for the extra 5 hp.

If you want to free up some power, just put some underthrow pullys in. Putting them on the power stearing pump, water pump and AC compressor will probably free up the same amount as removing the power stearing.

Actually a powersteering pump can suck down 20-30 horsepower at full lock. You can get away with removing the pump on a bronco with a conventional steering box, but it's pretty hard to turn a rack and pinion on a dak without the pump. Plus it wouldn't pass state inspection.

Yeah, but how many of us really need an extra 20-30 hp at full lock? It's not like anyone here races with their steering wheels locked in one direction. lol

...that would make an interesting sight though:)
