Subject: v6 3.9L automatics IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 2002 dakota QC 4x4 with the v6 3.9L engine. It seems a little under powered and does not have the "get-up and go" on take off. Is there anything that can be done to improve either of these? especially the accelleration on take-off. I can't even spin the tires. Is this normal for this particular engine? Would a new gear ratio help?

Message: I felt the same way when i got my 98 3.9L dak a year and a half ago. i was kinda dissapointed. right now i have put a K&N in and some flowmasters. there is a little bit of improvement but not much. it is frustrating whe nyou try to spin and you just cant, unless on gavel or something. also i just got new tired and i cant even power brake and burn on regular pavement unless it was just laid.

Message: That is why I got a stick... It will spin the tires on a second gear launch (and no, I'm _not_ revving to an ungodly level. Maybe 2200?).
Maybe a gear ratio change... probally a diffent Torque Convertor would help. I don't know too much about modding an automatic to make it go fast with the 3.9...

Message: So you can't spin tire...what's wrong with that? I would say that's good design and a limited slip differential. Take the LSD out and you'll spin tire up and down the streets -- like a 4-cylinder ford ranger.

The preformance out of the V6 is disheartening, but with an automatic it is down right pitiful. My truck will how ever leave a respectable cloud of smoke when I can get it to power brake. If I were you (and had the money) Joey, I would try to put a 318 in it.

Message: Are you guys forreal my dak must having something done to it internally that I know nothing about because it really halls a$$ all the way to 90 and its a 97 3.9 x-cab with a 3.92 sure grip rear and right now I am running the crappy stock 15x7 rims with radial t/a's and they have good tread but if I want I can slam the pedal at a stop light and it will smoke up as it pulls forward and the sure grip kicks because in first gear it revs to 4800 rpms real real fast for me it revs and leaves a hop patch on turns and a good one on a straight but my dak v6 is lean and mean and I just smoked a 3.4l x-cab 2wd 5speed Tacoma tonight and this guy was serious about winning so I felt real good when I beat him he was doing good until I realized that I forgot to kick off the overdrive and as soon as I hit the O/D off I picked up that extra 500 rpms and I was gone and I shift at 35, 55, 85, 100 I think I know that it kicks down pretty good at 100 and has a smooth increase til 110 but I have never had it higher because I don't need to do any fast but I am sure that it could do 125 on a stretch because the gen 2 daks register 125

Message: yeah its definatly normal. put intake and exhaust on and it becomes bareable, but u definatly cant spin the tires on dry ground although ive heard 4.7 autos cant either i dunno
why do u want to spin them so bad anyway? id rather have good accerleration from 30-60 that is where it really sux. what wrong with u getting a QC with a V6?? i only have a v6 cause i couldnt find a CC 4x4 with a V8 most of the QCs ive seen have V8s anyway. I actually just saw another LI blackdak that was a 4x4 V6 QC. good to know im not the slowest dak in the area hehe. (should have ordered a 2x4 loaded 4.7) oh well everyone is a good monday mourning QB

I need to get my head examined for getting a V6 4x4 but these guys need to be commited...lol

Message: if they (33") are all-terrains or mud-terrains, they spin easier....when i had my BFG's i was always spinning them...not enough tread on the ground i guess. my 255/60/15 had better traction then the wider allterrain....but i will agree; intake and exhaust help a lot on our V6s....they just don't breath well from the factory.

Message: I think 4x4s have a harder time spinning tires. Also its harder for autos
the more weight the harder it is to spin them...duh
also daks have OPTIONAL anti spin or limited slip differential or something, that might have something to do with it
but anyone who says they can't powerbrake has real problems...ugh

Message: only a good way to look cool. Try this: way #1, at a stoplight, sign, or in a parking light, in drive, step on your brake with a nice amount of pressure, then with your foot remainin applying the brake, step on the gas, mash or easy however, if you own a GOOD dakota, your rear wheels will spin as you leave rubber on the pavement and your fenderwells and maybe the bed(looks especially cool when you're pulling into a truck show). Way #2, with your car in neutral, brake applied, rev your engine, then go to drive your trans will slam(D'OH) and you will experience the same effect as in way 2. Caution: way 2 is more damaging to the tranny, be careful, use only around buddies or guys who are messin with you, to show them up!
Good Luck
