Subject: fuel in oil? IP: Logged
Message: Is it my imagination or could I be getting fuel in my crankcase oil? I get a really strong smell when I pull the dipstick to check it. I have been running mobil 1 oil for about the last 3 oil changes but I thought I may have smelled this before. The oil typically gets a dirty black very quickly but that may be the synthetic cleaning out all the sludge from the years of pennzoil abuse. Truck has 81k miles on it now.

Message: it depends on the year of your truck, If you have an older one that has a carborator on it the fuel pump is block mounted and the only thing that keeps the fuel out of the crankcase is the rubber pumping diaphram, if the diaphram has developed a small crack in it, which they all do over time, then that is how it is getting in. If you have a newer truck with fuel injection, it could be runnig too rich for too long, that causes the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber to not burn fully and eventually acumulate enough gas in the chamber as to allow it to wash down past the rings and into the crankcase, a carborator running too rich or in need of a rebuild can also do this, plus a bad gasket in the intake system can also cause this.good luck in figureing it out!

Message: Thanks slopehead. I have a 1999. I guess I could pull the plugs to see if they look oily or something. Start with the simple things. I haven't changed any of the ignition components either since new and maybe I am not getting a good burn in the cylinders. What gasket are you referring to? The belly pan gasket? Thanks for your help.
