AMSOIL SYNTHETIC UNIVERSAL ATF & AMSOIL ATF+4
Amsoil offered a second synthetic ATF, specifically for the ATF+4 applications, about four years ago. However it was only on the market for about a year before they were able to incorporate the unique friction modifier chemistry into the universal ATF. At that time, they discontinued this second ATF product.
---------------------------------------------
AMSOIL Synthetic Universal ATF
Recommended for applications requiring the following specifications:
Chrysler ATF+, ATF+2, ATF+3, ATF+4
AMSOIL synthetic automatic transmission fluid is a universal ATF designed to exceed nearly all foreign and domestic performance requirements. It improves fuel efficiency, reduces transmission temperatures by 20 to 50 degrees F and increases transmission life. Provides unsurpassed thermal stability and at least 3 times the life of conventional ATFs. Delivers maximum protection for towing and other severe-duty applications. Formulated with synthetic basestocks and the top-of-the-line additive package, AMSOIL ATF provides top performance, durability & efficiency.
-------------------------------------------------
Key Benefits to You:
Cleaner transmission components, More efficient power transfer, Lower Transmission temperatures, Dramatically less transmission wear, Smoother cold temperature operation, Long drain intervals, Compatible Applications: Nearly all passenger cars (foreign & domestic), Nearly all light duty trucks (including Dodge Dakotas).
--------------------------------------------------
There a number of folks who run Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF --- in Dakota's (Member - BigBlue QC for one), in Dodge diesel pickups, in "LH" sedans like the Concorde and Dodge minivans, etc. It works just fine.
--------------------------------------------------
Amsoil is NOT the only company offering multi-vehicle ATF. I simply believe that ours is better.

AMSOIL Synthetic Universal ATF is far superior to any group II base oil blended with hydro treated naphthenic oil. We use a premium additive chemistry that meets the static and dynamic coefficient of friction parameters to meet (and exceed) ATF+4 requirements. It also meets the coefficients of friction parameters for MERCON, MERCON V, DEXRON III, and Diamond SPIII.
All AMSOIL lubricants are designed to improve performance and increase protection to engine and transmission components. Chrysler developed the "+4" spec to "fix" an inherent chattering problem with the Chrysler transmissions. There are fluids that are far superior to Chryslers "+4" specs, including ours!
We didn’t just one day decide to make this claim just for the heck of it. This was very carefully researched and we have been developing superior fluids for over 30 years.

Amsoil is available in some stores -- mostly high performance speciality shops -- that lean more towards quality (for building performance and race engines, or an owner that appreciates superior products) ... than to a "price point" retail store (i.e. Walmart, etc.). I do know quite a few NAPA Stores that carry Amsoil (my cousin's NAPA for one). Even retail locations operate as Independent Amsoil Dealers so there is no directory of locations.

Mostly, Amsoil is available thruough Independent Dealers such as myself. Message: Useing any universal transmission fluid will void your Chrysley Warrenty if you are still covered. Universal means lower inventory costs for the manufactor, distributor and retail. It certainly does not mean it is superior. Buy ATF +4 from the dealer for less, get the right friction level. I am not saying that universal fluids may not do the job. But if I were driving to the moon, I would want ATF +4 in there.

I read it. The manufacturer can not deny warranty.
Also, i've seen other universal atf's on the shelf
besides Amsoil.

Message: There are several universal atf's on the shelf. The majority are Dexron lll with additive. This is specifically not recommended by Chrysler. ATF +4 has been available from Chrysler for about three years. It is not available from any other manufacturer at the current time. It is proprietary. It is specifically recommended by Chrysler.
These other products may perform as well or better but who wants to argue with Chrysler if you have a problem. Who will pay for the repairs or your legal bill.

Message: I have had Amsoil Universal ATF in my 4.7 00 Dak for about 20K and have had no problems. Didn't notice anything like different shift characteristics or convertor shutter, looks like it does what it's supposed to. The truck has 108K on it and if this stuff hurt a DC tranny I would think mine would be dead by now.
When I changed my ATF last time Dodge wanted $7+ a qt for ATF+4. Amsoil ATF was only $5-6 a qt with their preferred membership. I got 5 gallons to flush out the trans and also did the P/S system, with a gallon or so to spare. I couldn't beleive how bad the P/S fluid looked when I drained the reservoir and rack/pinion unit, brown and burnt.

Thank you DSW!
ATF+4 is the latest version of Dodge/Chrysler ATF. Dodge realized that their transmissions were weak (as per my cousin and bro-in-law that own Dodge Dealerships) and they had to reformulate their ATF many times so that the transmissions worked properly.
My cousin that owns a Dodge Dealershsip also owns a NAPA store and carries (and recommends) Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants to his clients. His Amsoil display is one of the largest displays on his floor --- and he has recommended Amsoil ATF to dozens of Dakota owners.
Amsoil Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid. Recommended for applications requiring the following specifications:
Chrysler ATF+, ATF+2, ATF+3, ATF+4
__________________________________________________
For the Record (and to clear the air):
Maybe this helps ... and if it is not applicable to your situation ... maybe you will find it to be good reading.
--------------------------------------------------
Chrysler went from ATF+ (MS 7176B) to ATF+4 in less than ten years. Essentially they were trying to make up for shifting problems in some of their transmissions by "tweaking" the frictional properties of their fluid rather than recalling the affected units. The ATF+4 fluid does seem to have solved the problems with some of the transmissions from the mid 1990's.
However, I know many Dodge owners that have noticeable and significant improvements switching to Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF. They state that the transmission characteristics are better than when it was new. Yes we all know ... transmissions from different manufacturers use various types of clutch pack materials. So ... is it possible to formulate a single fluid that will behave differently in GM, Ford and Chrysler transmissions? The specifications for friction characteristics are for how the fluid behaves in the particular application, given the types of materials used in that transmission. They are not the stand alone properties of the fluid, which is where I think the misunderstanding comes in.
Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF is truely "Universal"
REPEAT: Amsoil did offer a Synthetic ATF specifically for ATF +3/+4 applications about 3-4 years ago. However once they were able to integrate this additive chemistry into their Dexron/Mercon formulation, they discontinued making this second fluid.

Borrowed from another forum:
Every time I read about Amsoil ATF there are always a few who Say "no way can one ATF cover all those applications!!" but yet so many people, myself included, have used Amsoil's ATF with outstanding results.
Now Schaeffers new 204s is claiming the same thing as Amsoil, "a universal ATF for many applications, including ATF + 4" but I don't hear all the usual "there is no way a single ATF can cover all those applications".
I'm not making fun of Schaeffers, they make excellent products; but I do think it's funny that if Amsoil does something it's just a MLM scam or good luck with your warranty (but if it is anyone else it is accepted by the consumer, and A-Okay!). In my opion as a mechanic, most of the oil companies out there are just playing catch up. As Amsoil has said in the past "Been there done that".

Message: Disconnect the flared fittings at the rack and the low pressure pump hose, let it drain, work the wheels from lock to lock (with the engine off) and it will dump more out. Connect the fittings back up and fill the P/S unit with ATF+3 or ATF+4, start the truck and top off the P/S pump. Work the steering wheel from lock to lock 20-30 times to get the new fluid circulated and flush out the old funky stuff. Your 1/2 done now since you have drained out the bad stuff and flushed the remaining bad fluid into the ATF you just added.
Drain the P/S system again and this time fill it up with AMSOIL ATF. Your good to go and there is very little old burned up fluid mixing with your new Amsoil ATF.
This is the procedure I followed and the Amsoil ATF (power steering fluid He He) looks great after 50K.
