Subject: water pump question IP: Logged
Message: 1999 3.9 liter auto with air.
My water pump is weeping where the heater core hose connects to the water pump (drivers side of engine). Not at the fitting but down at the base of the water pump where the black metal pipe goes into the pump. Is there a way to stop this weep/small leak? Is there an o ring or something in there or is this metal pipe a solid part of the water pump....meaning I need a new water pump?
I was hoping to pull out the one bolt that holds this black pipe into the pump, remove/clean it and reseal it with RTV silicone? Any thoughts?
Any ideas?

Message: when that little hole weeps it is an indication that your pump is about to sprout a major leak at the seal between the pump housing and the pump shaft. Replace it ASAP.

Message: I have a 93 3.9 and I have had this problem in the past. (due to being through 3 water pumps). If it is the same setup, there is a groove near the end of the black pipe that has a o-ring. The problem i had was when replacing the o-ring and pushing the pipe back in the waterpump, was the o-ring was sheared to the size of the grove. What i did was to make sure the pipe and area it is going into was bone dry. put the new o-ring on the pipe, put some silicone on and around the area of the o-ring and pushed the pipe back in the waterpump (make sure the o-ring didnt shear when pushing the pipe in). LET THE SILICONE CURE BEFORE FILLING THE COOLANT.

Message: I had a more unusual problem with mine. it started throwing the belt off of the pulleys and wrapping it around the fan. anyone had this problem? I usually thought that water pumps leaked when they were going bad? but this one didn't.
