Message: Okay...I know there's probably a million posts on this, but in each of them noone can decide the actual amount of oil it needs. Last time I was told so much by my grandpa, overfilled it and had to drain some. Not exactly fun...
So can someone with a Gen. 3 tell me what their manual says for an oil change with the filter?
Also... what's the cheapest filter that is very well-liked (since most of ya'll hate Fram) and where could I pick one up (what size too)? And...last question. What are some of the cheaper well-rated synthetic oils that are easy to obtain like at K-mart and Wally World? I'd go for Amsoil since many of you love it and I know if I ever had a question about it Steven Roark would be sure it was thoroughly answered, but for the time being I want something I can pick up right around home. I'm considering switching over to synthetics even though my grandpa says, "It ain't worth it...it ain't worth it!" But I disagree after reading a lot of posts.
Oh yeah...if anyone has the time, could you post a quick price comparison between the average dino oil and average synthetic. I don't need any long answers, just something general.
Thanks,
Josh

Message: I have a lot of customers that run mobil 1 and
castroil synthetics and are having very good
luck.
The fram tough gard is a fair filter, I use all
Wix in the shop.
Here pick one after reading the oil filter study
page
http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html
Synthetics from $20 to $30 for 5 Qts your truck
will hold 4.25 to 4.5 Qts, just put in 4 start
let run a minit than wait a few mins and top off
as needed
Synthetics have smaller moloclues and the film
is better than big and small like dino oil less
friction and heat is the resault making for less
wear.

Message: Thanks a lot guys... If I can get the cash, I'll be changing my oil this weekend. I figure I'll run 5w-30 over the winter and switch to 10w-30 when it warms back up. If that's not okay...feel free to speak up:)
Oh yeah...when running synthetics, I should change the filter every 3000 miles as always and the oil every ? miles?

This Post --- Oil Filter Manufacturers
Many Dakota owners (and others) are trying to figure out how many different oil filter manufacturers there are, which one is best for their particular need, and which manufacturer makes what brands. From what I can gather, here is what is out there:
Honeywell - makes Fram (In Canada the Quaker State filters are Fram filters / In the USA, QS is Purolator), Pennzoil, Quaker State
Arvin Meritor - makes Purolator Premium Plus, PureONE, Ford OEM, V-1 & SureFlow (Superflow?)
Dana - makes Wix and Napa Gold/Silver, AC Delco DuraGuards for Canada
Baldwin (Parent of Hastings) - Baldwin, Hastings, Amsoil, Casite, maybe others
Champion Labs - Mobil 1, K&N, Supertech, AC Delco DuraGuards (two different types) for USA, Bosch Premium, STP, Ultraguard Gold, Deutch & Luberfiner
Cummins Engine - owns Fleetguard
Mann - a top quality German filter maker (for our many German Friends on this site).
*** Walmart SuperTech - Manufactured by Bosch / Champion Labs. While Super Tech is a pretty decent filter, it isn't up to the same level as the Bosch Premium, even if it is made in the same place. The Bosch premium has a higher quality media, and filters out smaller particles ... straight from Champion that the SuperTech is a 20 micron filter and the Bosch is a 15 micron filter.
Wal-Mart buys in such quantities, that they can negotiate good prices with their suppliers. I'm sure Champion was quite pleased to enter into a deal which allows Wal-Mart to sell these filters for $1.97, when it allows Champion to make enough of these private label oil filters to stock every Wal-Mart in the US. The Champion salesman who landed that account surely got a nice bonus!
In response to GB2000's question ...
... "what's the cheapest filter that is very well-liked"
For approximately $2, the Super Tech filter is very well constructed for all who might be interested.

There are two considerations when choosing a filter, FLOW & FILTRATION.

GB2000, Regarding Viscosity ......
--------------------------------------------------
You should try to stay within the manufacturers recommended guidlines ... with minor adjustments based on climate, driving conditions, and driving style.
--------------------------------------------------
VISCOSITY
VISCOSITY..in the general term is defined as " a fluids resistance to flow". it's a measure of the internal friction of the fluid or the resistance to the movement of one layer of molecules relative to an adjacent layer.
THE LOWER (SMALLER or FIRST #, as in "10w-_) NUMBER.. is the Cold Cranking measurement, made at low temperatures, using a concentric cylinder viscometer to predict the oils cranking resistance in an engine during cold starting.
The measuring devices, or viscosmeters, most often used are in the form of close-fitting concentric cylinders. The fluid being evaluated is placed between the cylinder walls, the outer cylinder is held stationary and the inner cylinder is rotated. The speed of rotation is measured for a given force to calculate the viscosity, most commonly reported in cp or centipoise units. Also known as Absolute Viscosity.
THE HIGHER (BIGGER or SECOND #, as in "-30") NUMBER...is commonly measured in capilary tubes, in which the time for a fixed volume of fluid to flow through the tube under gravity at operating temp (100c)is measured and reported as cSt or centistokes. This is used most commonly to report the normal operating viscosity of motor oils or the higher number.
--------------------------------------------------
VISCOSITY GRADE
" 0W- " is a viscosity GRADE, not a viscosity MEASUREMENT.
When testing for cold fluidity, the temperature is lowered approximately 5 degrees centigrade between each test.
The Cold Crank Simulator Apparent Viscosity is tested at:
-20 C for 10W- (approximately -5 F)
-25 C for 5W- (approximately -15 F)
-30 C for 0W- (approximately - 20 F)
It is my understanding that the oil has to be labelled at the lowest temperature it meets the specifications.
It may not be long before someone comes out with a " -5W-30 " which would correspond with -35 C (approximately -30 F).
--------------------------------------------------
I hope this helps.

Message: You must spend alot of time surfing dodgedakotas.com and whenever someone types "oil" or "filter" you get a smile on your face. Amsoil, very good stuff so you say, but when I'm paying 200 for truck and 180 for insurance I can't afford that stuff, I have to settle with my QS 10w-30, unless there's better stuff around the same PRICE, anyone?

Message: I found the best place on the web to buy Baldwin filters is Associated Diesel, Inc.
http://www.adiesel.com/
They have great prices. For the Dakota, the stock filter (B34) is $5.04 each when you buy a 6-pack. The longer version (B2) is $3.97 each when you buy a 6-pack. If you use the B2, make sure you have the clearance. It is 1-1/4" longer than stock.
You can go to the Baldwin Filters website for applications and specifications:

Filters for various budgets:
A $7 Filter:
If a slightly higher price is okay - might I recommend Amsoil SDF oil filters, and yes a bit over $5 at the $7 level (preferred customer or dealer price). Well constructed. Strong. Excellent by-pass mechanism. The AMSOIL SDF-42 oil filter has a change interval of 6-months or 12,500 miles (whichever comes first - when using Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oil).
AMSOIL oil filters are made by Hastings, which is a subsidiary of Baldwin. Baldwin still manufactures and markets under both the Baldwin and the Hastings name (Hastings and AMSOIL are made in the same plant in Nebraska) . Baldwin representatives told me that the AMSOIL oil filters use a better grade of filter media, found in only a VERY FEW of the Baldwin filters - simply a matter of economics - it costs more - therefore the reason for the higher AMSOIL Filter price (not a middleman markup).
Amsoil filters are not Hastings! The confusion is that Amsoil just markets the Hastings brand so their dealers will have a source for EVERY filter application imaginable. Amsoil offers and sells Hastings filters but WILL NOT sell Hastings filters for which there is an equivalent Amsoil filter.
In the case of Amsoil filters, I understand the media is different in that they use a synthetic type. The Amsoil filters are rated at 98% effective at 20 microns and about 65% at 10 microns. The information I got from Hastings is they are 98.7% effective at 45 microns and 50% at 22 microns. Baldwin also uses a type of synthetic in their filters that are rated "severe service". I don't have any numbers on these. Not all Baldwins are rated severe service. I think that the severe service filters are for heavy-duty equipment.
When AMSOIL went to Baldwin/Hastings with the specs for the "then new" Mobil 1 oil filter, Baldwin told them that they could certainly manufacture filters that could outperform it, simply by changing to the new media - which they did for Amsoil - which is why many feel the Amsoil Filter is superior.
----------
A $5 filter:
If you're set on getting a $5 filter, then Bosch Super Premium or Wix. Reasons: Top notch construction, good filtering, and good flow. (The PureOne is in this price range too, but I've got issues with restricted flow in the PureOne because of the densely packed media.)
----------
A $2 filter:
Again, Walmart SuperTech - Manufactured by Bosch / Champion Labs. Wal-Mart buys in such quantities, that they can negotiate good prices with their suppliers. For approximately $2, the Super Tech filter is very well constructed.
----------
And if $7 (preferred customer price) is out of your budget for Amsoil SDF oil filters, it won't hurt to ask Santa for a case of Amsoil Synthetic Oil and a few filters under the tree.
