Subject: Some general questions. IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I just got my first new truck, A dakota 4x4 x-cab 3.9L. I love it! No problems here...I just turned 2k. Just a few qustions.
1. I noticed that after a trip I have what seems like water dripping onto my ypipe. I know that I haven't driven throu a puddle or anything like that, in fact I think that it is condinsastion. Seems to be comeing from the firewall. Does anyone else have this problem?? With the water dripping onto the ypipe it makes a loude steam sound. Will this pose any problems with the ypipe breaking from the water splashing on it??
2. I also noticed that I have 2 fans. One on the moter (as in tuned by the moter itself) with a cluch fan assem I think. I also have an electric fan mounted to the radiator. Do I need both? I have herd the electric fan kick on without the a/c on so I think that it is a regular cooling fan. If so, can I remeove the motor driven fan for a little bit more hp?
3. I did the s bolt, and removed the rubber shield, and removed the "headlight pipe" from the air box, and left the hole open to catch more air from the front. Will this work ok in the long run? I plan on useing a dropin K&N for now, and a cold air later.
4. I also plan on putting a new cap and roter....any sugestions...its a 2k3 btw.
5. New plugs?? I herd the autolights don't work that great in the newer trucks....any truth to that?
6. Cat back or muffler? Muffler seems to be the way to go....no major restritions from the cat to the muffler...just stait pipe.
7. Throttle body upgrade or spacer?? V8 TB or upgraded V6....herd some things about the V8 not working the best on the 6. Any truth??
8. After I do a 180 t-stat I was thinking Jet 2 chip....any words of adviece on that one??
Thanks for any replies. I love the truck...just looking for a little free help. If I did everything....what do you thinkg I would be pushing Hp/Tq wise. I know some are going to say I should have gotten a v8, but I didn't want one. I like the v6...stock it has plenty of power for me. With my 3.93 gears I pulled a camper out of mud barried up to its axels, in low range without touching the gas. My dad who is all about jeeps and big v8s was impressed.
Thanks all

Message: The water you see may be dripping from the A/C condensor. I've seen a similar thing on my truck when I use the air.

Message: 1. probably from A/C unit will not harm anything
and is normal on almost any vehicle with A/C
2. You can remove the big clutch fan for about
5 to 10 HP but use another elect fan with an
adjustable thermo the small elec fan will not be
enough on hot days any with a rating of 2400 to
2800 cfm will work great.
3. The increased air flow will drop the
compartment temps and help in the long run keeping
your filter or cold air tube from heating up
4.Napa MO26 MO28 cap and rotor made by borge
warnner and sold under the Echlin name at Napa
for around $15 solid brass incerts will transfer
more voltage to the plugs
5.I just put a set of AP5224 gaAPED AT .045 in a
01 with 40,000 miles and the customer was very
happy and gained 1 mpg. The 5224 is the same as
what mopar calls the truck plug with the extended
reach and they run great in the newer trucks
6.Just a low restriction muff like a dynomax or
flowmaster 50 don't waist your money on an
expensive catback system they do not give the
HP and torque the manufactures claim. The best
dyno runs I have seen on the V6's was with a low
restriction muff and factory tail pipe and its
just a little louder than stock.
7.Don't even consider the spacer they do nothing
but whistle loud, After market TB is the way to
go 48mm F&B or 46mm fastman very little diff
between them performance wise and no low end loss
that some trucks experiance with the V8 TB swap
8. Jet 2's do help a little with throttle response
and gas milage but you would gain about 15 18 HP
with the microchips super tunner over maybe 5 with
the jet all it does is fool the computer to gain
a slight timing advance, the microchips tunner
will rewrite both timing and fuel curves for
better performance and the 3 V6's I have installed
them on 2 ran fine on 89 1 had a slight ping so
he is running 92 oct fuel. and all 3 gained
between 1 to 3 mpg on the highway with the tunner
as long as they kept there foot out of it.
Man that was a long few general questions lucky
I have lots of time on my hands in the evining
