Subject: New Truck Oil Change IP: Logged
Message: I put my first 1,000 on my new 3.7 V6 Dakota Quad Cab 4X4 and wanted to change the oil. I've changed oil on my own cars for the last 12 years. Now I'm stuck with a truck with no oil in it and an oil filter that is stuck on harder then I've ever seen before. I've tried strap wrenches, oil filter sockets, screwdriver through the filter, and it's still seized on there. Never in my life have I ran in to a problem like this with an oil change. Any suggestion???

If you have good access to the filter from under the truck take a nice big screwdriver and hammer and line it up with a spot on the old filter then drive the screwdriver thru the filter in a spot that you can pull on it and turn the filter off with the driver thru the filter.

I had some so stuck that by the time I got them
off all that was left was the part with the
threads, easy to grab with a small pipe wrench
to remove.
And it took a hammer and chisel to get that far
Maybe an option because when they are that stuck
a guy has to dream up ways to grab it. sometimes
sliping a piece of folded sand paper inbetween
the filter and wrench will grab enough to remove
it.
What a pain hey
How do you like the new 3.7 V6

Message: What about going and buying like 1/4" steel rod and using it like you do with the screwdriver through it, but with it being much longer it'll be acting somewhat like a breaker bar...if it don't bend first.

Sometimes it helps to look at the problem in a mirror.
Try twisting the truck off of the filter.

Now ... to honestly try and help:
(I think you already tried with #'s 1 & 2) TRY # 3
1) A "band" type oil filter wrench of the proper size works best. They work well even on the tightest filters.
There are different varities: One wrench looks like a thin flexable metal band about 1 1/2 - 2 inches in width and makes a full loop. You just slip it over the filter and pull the "loop" tight and the filter comes right off. Another looks like a "hook". Another looks like it has canvas or fabric as its "band". And another is a "chain wrench" vice grip. Or ... one of those "vice-grip" pliers with "extra-large" jaws. There may be other varities also.
--------------------------------------------------
2) Cap wrench and a ratchet
--------------------------------------------------
2) A pair of 16-inch Channel-Lock pliers does a great job on "over-tightened" oil filters.
--------------------------------------------------
4) "Strap-it-Up" with about 100 firecrackers left over from July 4th.
--------------------------------------------------
5) A good aim with a shotgun
--------------------------------------------------
(just kidding with #'s 4 & 5)
Hope this helps and good luck!
