I was wanting some feedback on how these two engines compare to each other as workers. Too much comparing of Racing is going on and would like to see how these compare in towing, handling payload, etc..? And has anyone had both of these trucks and if so what u think of how they handle the load?

I have the 3.9 and like it. If I were to put one against the other I would go with the 4.3. Just a better motor in my opinion. Let the flaming begin:)

My 3.9Mag will tow just about anything. I pulled 2 Sportsman 500's plaris ATV's up a 4% grade, doing about 60 with O/D off, and really wasn't bogged down all that much. I mean i could feel it, but it wasn't so much to pull that it made it feel like real work to do it.

The 3.9 is a real work horse.

Friend of mine has a Chevy 4.3, I would use it because it was more ponies under the hood, I think (feel free to correct me) that they both have compairable torque. However, I will say that my 3.9 towed a two axle trailer carrying a set of couches to Fayettville AR. and it did not have to much problems, though the 6% grade really ate my speed up.

in my experience the 3.9 is great for towing, and the 4.3 just average. our 3.9 truck has hauled 5000 lbs multiple times, and we even pulled a pretty decent size tractor with 3 point attachment and loader on the front and didnt have any real trouble.

I own a 3.9l dak and have spent a lot of time driving the 4.3 in the astrovan, I would much rather be pulling with the astro then my dakota, the 4.3 has a lot more torque than a 3.9, something 260ft/lbs and its got an extra 25hp, hands down, 4.3 all the way. Flame away.

my experience:
i had a 3.9, i towed an old el camino on a trailer no problem. used to put 2 250's and a 125 dirtbike squeezed in the back every weekend plus gear and passengers. couldn't even tell anything was back there. it was a club 4x4 v6 auto.

had an 84 s10 with 2.8. towed a 18 foot camping trailer, poor truck and i know those motors seem gutless but it got the job done.

never towed with the 96 blazer, but the 4.3 in it seems like driving the 2.8, recently i was trying to climb a steep hill near my house and i couldn't even start to go up it in 4x4. my dak could get up almost halfway in 2x4 but it also had lim. slip.

bottom line: i don't like the blazer and im not impressed at all by the 4.3 or the 4x4 system. my response is not biased towards either vehicle because i have owned a lot of trucks, i liked them all.

I pulled a 2000 pound trailer built for a crane
with 5,500 pounds of custom cut full 3X12's
all 24 feet long.

$12,000 worth of custom cut presure treated lumber
for a guys pier

The only prob I had was swaying over 50mph good
thing I only had to pull it 30 miles.

Also, if Dodges are that bad and Chevy's rule, why are you on this web site checking out this cool Dodge Dakota Forum?? They can't be that bad if your here looking at this forum.

I've owned both and, as V6's go, the Chevy 4.3 is a dud. And as Ed put it, where is a V8 in a factory S-10? Buy a Dodge if you want power!

I'm only a kid but my moms husband(NOT my step dad) has a 91 s-10 blazer and he thinks its the best, I have a 2k 3.9 dakota sport 2W 5spd drive stock. We had to move a little nissan stanza an old one, like 80 somethin. But anyways he said I could not pull it, he said my transmission couldn't handle it and he thinks my engine isn't powerful enough. Is this true?? Is his blazer better than mine, will his transmission allow more?
I don't really know, can ya'll help, what kinda differential does my stock 2000 sport have?do I need a different one?

I have both a 3.9 and a 4.3HO. Based on my personal experience, I would say the 4.3 is a more RELIABLE engine. I have had virtually NO problems whatsoever with my 1991 GMC full size 2wd pickup. Close to 200K on the odometer. When I need a work truck, I drive the GMC. When I wanna cruise, I drive the Dakota. I'm not speaking for every 3.9 and 4.3 out there, just my own experience with them.

well for one i think the dakotas are cool.. but i do own a 2002 chevy blazer xtreme and it's kick ass...but if i was to haul anything i think i would use a chevy pick up knowing i can haul about 9,000lb...i have towed 4,000lb with my xtreme with pride..now if you all are going to say that chevy suck then you are all wrong and need to get a life gm owns a lot of other cars that you mite own and call a peace of sh*t...all i have to say is the only thing that would be worth hauling would be a chevy pick up not no blazer so stop comparing...........xtreme rules

dodge SUcks... That is just the way it is.
All these people here trying to justify why they bought a dodge.
Most who bought a dodge just have NO credit and since dodge has such an INCREADABLE finacing program to deal with BKs and charge off then Most of the low lifes can buy a dodge.
I would wait and buy a Used chevy...and never look back

Well, I will defend my purchase. '97 Dak CC 3.9

I could not stand the interior comfort of the S-10, Ranger, Nissan, or Toyota compacts. I hated the way they drove, and I hated how little they are. The Dak had more interior comfort, and are a lot more comfortable to drive, IN MY OPINION. Am I 100% pleased with it, no, but do I think I would like the S-10 or other compacts better, deifnitely not. I tow a camper every other weekend, and the Dak does a fine job. The full size pickups do a better job, but I can park the Dak easier, and don't need 40 acres to turn it around.

BTW, I have owned the truck since '99. At that time as well as today I have A-plus credit. I could have bought any of the full size 1/2 tons, or any of the compacts with no problem. It just came down to what I needed, and what I liked. The other compacts, and the full size pickups were either undersized, or over qualified for me.

Well, I have very good credit, and I am on my second Dodge Dakota. They have been relatively good trucks, the first was a '94 with about 89,000 miles on it when I sold it. I purchased it cash, why bother to pay someone else intrest. I decided to purchase a used one the next time, needless to say I payed cash for that one too. You see, why bother to finance if you do not need to?
Your crack about low-lives owning Dodge's is unfounded, obviousy you need to get in the real world with the rest of us working class stiff's. If you really like Chevy's thats fine, everyone has an opinion, but don't come on a Dodge owners forum and tell us we are low-lives. I am a simple forester, but remember this, this low-life provides you with toilet paper to wipe that high and mighty asz of yours.

I have always had better luck pulling with the 3.9, however in a race the 4.3 will rip me a new, well yea.

But then again an s-truck is not a truck, its a toy waiting for you to wreck..

The hospitals like the 4.3s, they get rich.
