 Subject: Walmart Super Tech VS other brands

Has anyone else tried Wal-marts Super Tech oil. Not the regular oil but the synthetic blend. I am a big fan of using high quailty oils but I always wondered was it worth all the extra money. I have a 2000 Dakota and my wife has a 2000 chevy astro. I have used mobil 1 oil since new in my Dakota and super tech since new in her van since it was cheaper and I just am not a chevy fan, also the both always had Fram filters. My dakota has 56,000 miles on it and the van has 62,000. I have changed the oil very close to every 3000 miles (within 40 miles of 3000).
According to Blackstone Laboratories both engines have had just about the same wear to each engine. I along with the help of blackstone have come up with an conclusion of-
I have spent just over $400 in oil for my Dokota and right at $140 in oil for the Astro. The only time that more expensive oil would come in to play if for some reason I did not change the oil for about 8000 miles and then the mobil 1 would stand out by far but if you are someone like me that always change my oil every 3000 miles then you would have nothing to worry about. I do know that I will be saving some money the next time I go to buy oil.
Its just something to think about the next time you purchase your oil

why would you buy synthetic oil if your going to change it every 3000 miles. the whole point is so you get more miles out of it so you don't have to change it that often.

wal mart syn oil and filter,, change it every 5,000 miles at 70-75-80-get the idea. $ 3 qt oil and a $ 2 filter, costs me $ 14 for an oil change

rigby38 you've got the wrong idea. The whole idea of synthetic lubricants is that the polymers hold together longer "under pressure", not nescessarliy "over time". If you really want to compare longevity, studies show that nearly all multigrade dino oils break down to their thinnest viscosity after about 1,500 miles. Synthetics naturally are stronger so they will maintain viscosity longer but this benefit is a result of their purpose, which I've already mentioned. Your statement is however valid in that you shouldn't have a problem using dino oils if you change after 3,000 miles, but if I used them I'd use an addative with it at about 1,500.
Oilguy: In a normal street vehicle use I think you should buy the cheapest synthetic you can get, they are all superior to dino oil in every way. I've had no negative experiences with supertech. My oil change budget ($3x_ and $2) is the same as mddak. You also shouldn't have a problem at 5,000mi intervals but I still change mine at 3,000mi and I like the fact that if I can't get around to it right away it's no big deal.

At BigLots in FL they had Havoline (Texaco) 10w-30 synthetic (it doesn't say "blend", so I assume it's full synthetic) for $1.99/qt. I know it's probably Group III base but at that price I bought all they had on the shelf (32 quarts).

syn oil dosent break down ever it just gets dirty change you filter every 3000 top off the oil and if your still worried about it change the oil every other filter but in my 87 dakota i change the oil evry 9000 miles with filter changes at every 3000 and use good filters like fram extra gaurd and only use mobil 1 syn or amaco ultimate i have over 230000 on my 87 no tick no knock clean under the covers and exelent oil pressure

Walmart SuperTech is a Group III hydrocracked base oil,
... not PAO based 100% Synthetic --- Group IV/V.
Who make it? There are actually two answers:
In the U.S. -- Quaker State ... (actually a
subsidiary of the "old" Quaker State Company)
In Canada it is made by PetroCanada using
Chevron's hydrocracking technology.

I don’t know who makes the Wal-Mart stuff but I do know don’t by castrol syntec its not a true synthetic its just a highly messaged dino oil it does lube a little better but not much

there are others but these are for sure true synthetics u may ask y do they call it synthetic if its not heres an answer mobile 1 took castrol to court over calling there oil fully synthetic when in fact it was made from a highly refined dino oil mobile 1 lost cause castrol argued since they refined it so much it should be called a synthetic since its not structured the same as the other dino oils
To bad this stuff breaks done the same
u know y its a good reason to use the true synthetics (and I used to be a real dino oil die hard fan but the numbers changed that)
Cause a dino oil protects on test D-3233 500- 800psi (good for breaking in the engine)
on the same test fully synthetics protected at 1000- 1200 psi (doesn’t let the engine break in)
synthetics take a lot more heat to break down (great for turbo charged vehicles)
also synthetics dont leave carbon everywhere so u may notice after a long time running dino oil and u switch over to fully synthetic ur oil darkens quickly for the first 2 oil changes don’t be alarmed its cause the synthetic is cleaning it the gunk

but the leading cause of oil break down is Dilution from gas mainly if ur gonna try to change ur oil when needed take a sample every 1000 miles and get it tested after u figure out whens a good milage to change ur oil at do it cause it does vary from vehicle to vehicle some need it every 3000 others 5000 synthetics usually extend oil change intervals due to there durable nature but they also get Diluted from gas

rigby38, were did you get that info from!
One of the biggest reasons for using full synthetic oil is that it runs much cleaner and will keep the inside of your engine cleaner. It will last longer but I would not play a game of "lets see how long I can go without changing my oil" Thats just asking for trouble.

Amsoil Extended Drain Synthetic Motor Oils
I try to be very clear when talking about extended drains. 10,000 mile oil change is absolutely possible. Up to a 25,000 mile interval is possible under certain conditions, but please read further for additional information. But the KEY here is that --- The 3,000 mile recommendation is overkill, especially with superior synthetic oils.
I know it's hard to believe, but there are a few things that I would like to clarify. Amsoil has been in the oil industry for 30 years. Due to Amsoil's superior synthetic composition and advanced performance additives, AMSOIL performs much longer than do conventional petroleum and other synthetic motor oils. No other major oil manufacturer matches AMSOIL's 25,000-mile or one-year drain interval recommendations (whichever comes FIRST, changing the filter every six months).
However, the 25,000 mile /1 year that is on the back of the bottle is NOT an absolute! One must realize that is for non-severe service (highway miles where you have stable operating conditions) and that the indicated drain interval also has a time period of 1 year maximum as well.
***** READ THIS PLEASE EVERYONE: Under a combination of city and highway circumstances, AMSOIL recommends up to 2 or 3 times longer, it means up to 2 or 3 times the equipment manufacturer's recommendation (If your owners manual states 3k miles , then you can change at 9k, and if your owners manual states 5k then 12-15k changes would be alright based on driving habits ... the harder you drive, the sooner the change). Proper filtration is also very important. AMSOIL SDF Oil Filters must be changed at least every 6 months regardless of miles driven.
Notice: Modifications to engine will change service intervals.
Notice: More frequent service may be required under severe service operating conditions.
Notice: For drain interval beyond 3x manufacturers recommendations (especially the 25k change) --- Regular oil analysis is recommended for establishing drain intervals.
AMSOIL --- 30 years of manufacturing oil and mountains of data and tests make these clains possible.
