Subject: Ball Joints and the Law suit IP: Logged
Message: On CBS news they had an overblown presentation on Durango's an Dakota's ball joints failing. I have 131000 miles on my Dak and it has the original ball joints and at this point they don't show any slack. Did Dodge have more than one supplier? Or was the quality control poor? Since the ball joints can't be lubed it is worth changing them out now to head off future problem's? Any one got any thoughts?

Message: What do you mean by overblown? This is a well documented problem and one that is way overdue for action from DC. It's probable that your Dak has seen 131K of street/highway driving which doesn't stress the suspension much. My 99 has 52K with no sign of problems yet, but I don't do any off-roading, so maybe I'll be lucky like you.

Message: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/gm_dexcool.html Yup...there's one of many I found on it. Just because GM won't own up to their problems doesn't mean DC isn't required to recognize this problem though, BUT it does give us more ammo against them damn Chevy trolls:)

Message: My upper ball joints had to be replaced at 60k
the drivers side was completely shot. With the
truck on the lift I could pull out on the top of
the tire and it would give about 1/2" or more.
High speed cornering would have put huge stress
on it
I was hearing a thunking sound if I went from
accelerating to braking quickly.
fwiw - The guy at NTB told me that he has
seen tons of Dakotas and Durangos with shot
upper ball joints.

Message: Go to www.rockauto.com and get some Moog ball joints. My total was $170 for the uppers and lowers and they delivered them in 2 days. I haven't installed them yet, but I've heard on this site that they're the way to go.

There was a report on CBS October 27, 2003 about ball joint failure shortly after truck reaches 30k miles (and maybe you can find it in the archives on their website) --- but how much did CBS "play it up"? Chrysler will not issue a recall and is a therefore the subject of a class action lawsuit.
Here is a different take.
If NBC had aired the special they would have worked some explosions into the story! Remember when they did this once for "effects"? Maybe CBS will hire the NBC Dateline pyrotechnic professionals to rig charges of C4 to the ball joints next time.
My concern --- "How" and "Why" does the failure occur? ... and why haven't they done something about it?
DC will not do anything until they are forced to by the courts or a few hundred people die due to a failure.

You are right about DC They will only react not act to help their customers. some one has to have some idea why some ball joints have no problem and others self destruct. I just rechecked my ball joints today and still no slack. I have driven over a lot of rough roads. I had to replace my front shocks because the lower rubber gromets were beat out so much that they rattled. so I can't say that mine have never been stressed. I still wonder if it is not a supplier problem or perhaps a quality control problem.
