I have myself pretty convinced that my converter/s have gone bad. Are there one or two? In the last month or two my truck has started running like total crap. I took all my mods off thinking something was up. Its still the same. Gas grade don't make a dif either. Engine sounds real loud and lacks power big time and have trouble accelerating uphills unless i stay in second till i get to the top. Also sounds like the exhaust pitch has lowered and coming out from under the cab instead of muffler. I was going down a hill in 4th gear and took my foot off the gas and the truck actually slowed down like i was putting the brake, it would have went faster in neutral!!! Now the truck also sounds like it has a vacuum leak cause it sounds like its sucking somewhere. I hate my dealer cause they don't fix anything!! How do i convince them to check the exhaust pressure or emissions? Cause if it passes emissions they will say nothings wrong with it and i've heard from many that they had bad converters and still passed emissions. Something I feel is very wrong with this truck. Oh, it has 16000 on it, 2002 sport rc 5 spd. I need to try some self diagnoses with this thing so i need some help from you guys. I honestly believe one day that this site could put those stupid mechanics at the shop out of business, rock on!!!

I don't tow anything, the way it is running i couldn't even pull a jetski!! Can you tell me if the tach on this truck is cable driven, how about the speedometer? Part of my noise sounds like a bad speedo cable when i deccelerate but don't know if its the tack or speedo. There is definately a sucking noise. Wondering about possbily a cracked throttle body/intake manifold.

If it only has 16,000 and is a 2002 then let the dealer handle it under warranty instead of throwing away your money, but if you really want to bust your knuckles anyway unbolt the exhaust at the manifolds and take it for a spin, it will be loud and may set the check engine light but if your power is restored you can bet that the cats are plugged, if this is the case you will want to find the reason that caused the cats to become plugged..it's not due to poor design, regardless of what you find IT IS UNDER WARRANTY AND SHOULD BE REPAIRED BY THE MFG...what mods do you have?..perhaps one of them contributed to the problem(if indeed the cats are plugged)

First of all, dont take advice form this "jstdume" guy, as that will do more damage then good to your engine. Your Dakota is not made to run with out any exhaust. Its a 02 model so take it to the dealer and if they say that nothing is wrong with it and you know that there is, then find a new dealer. Chances are that it is no way the converter, maybe if it had 160,000 on it and not 16,000

For a quick spin around the block to see if your cats are plugged this would be a very good test and can in no way harm your engine...a plugged cat on the other can cause some serious side effects if it goes unchecked. Mileage does not cause a cat to plug, so it is irrelevant if the vehicle has 16,000 or 160,000. I have seen plugged cats on vehicles with as little 2,000 miles on them..most of them caused by people who bolt on every mod that they can find that alters the air, fuel and timing. When these components go bad or do more than they are supposed you usually end up with a very rich running engine which can plug a new cat in as little as 1,000 miles...I have seen it on more than 1 occasion. Last week I had a 4.7 in the shop with a plugged cat caused by some idiot who tried to reprogram his ecm, It was running so rich your eyes were on fire when you got within 10 feet of this thing, all of this caused the head gasket on the left bank to let loose, the vehicle had a little over 7,000 miles on it and Daimler Chrysler denied the warranty claim on it due to the fact that the customer caused the failure....all for the better...I got paid

I have had 2 cat's replaced on my '99 3.9L. My truck is stock with 79000 miles. First converter went at 25000 miles, second at 74000. I don't tow anything. Have known others that had to have the cat replaced at about same times as mine and the 2 separate dealers I went to both said they've seen it before on the Dakota. Converters are required by law to be guaranteed to 80000 miles.(At least that's what the last dealer said when they fixed it).

It is true, federal law requires emission systems to be under warranty for a minimum of 80,000 miles. There are some cases where the govt has made mfg's extend that warranty..just ask Honda. What happened to the cats on your Dak, did they come apart inside, not working properly or did they become plugged?

They came apart on the inside. There was a rattle coming from the exhaust under the cab and I took it in and the dealer replaced the cat and the oxy sensor that was down stream from it. I didn't have anykind of power problems since it wasn't blocked.

For some reason Chrysler has a problem with the converter beds breaking loose from the inside of the shells..poor design...not much that we can do about it except have them replace it under warranty if this occurs
