Message: First of all I just wanted to say what a nice site this is. This is my first time visiting and I think it is great how all these dakota owners come together.
I have a 99 2wd automatic 2dr 3.9l myself, and am getting ready to tow an ATV. I've never towed anything before and I still need to outfit my truck for towing.
I was wondering what I need, as far as which type of hitch is the best, I heard a reese hitch was the best choice. I also wanted to know what I need to do as far as wiring goes, like how to install the brake lighting from my truck to the trailer, because my truck didn't come with the towing package.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks.

Message: Any brand hitch will be fine. I have a hiddin-hitch on my car and it has done great. just get whatever is easily available and the right price. And please take the time and save the monye: install it yourself. If I could do it on my car (round hole square peg with no room to work) you can do it on a truck.
For an ATV and its usual trailer size you could get away with a Class 1 reciever but you might as well at least get a class2 or splurge and get the class 3. But what are the chances you will be towing that much weight and need that much tongue weight capacity? Class 2 should be fine. Search the net if you want an idea of what is out there.
For the wiring: most major parts stores and any trailer supply store will have a no-splice wiring kit. you unplug the stock harness, plug this in, plug the rest of the stock harness into the kit, drill a hole for ground and you are done. Quick, easy, cheap, and fool proof.

Message: Walmart has the wiring harnesses for any application you could want. It plugs into the factory plugs without having to cut the wires on the truck.
I have a Draw-tite hitch on my Dakota. (class IV) If your going to pay for a class I or II, it will only cost little bit more for a heavier duty hitch. The Draw-tite installed in about a half hour with no drilling.

Message: Thanks for the info guys
I think I'll go for a class III or IV hitch, just in case I ever do want to tow something heavier.
