I just bought a 95 Dakota SLT V6 with a flakey gas gauge (it bounces quite a bit). I'm trying to figure out the size of the gas tank. So I put a 2 gallon gas can in the bed of the truck and decided to drive until I experienced performance problems. After 210 miles I started to get bad vibrations and a loss of power.
I dumped the 2 gallons of gas into the tank and drove back to town. The power was fine but the vibrations continued. I filled up the tank with 10 gallons of gas. The truck has been running fine for the last week since this experiment.
I want to know if I really have a 12 gallon tank (that just seems too small for a pickup truck) or do I have a fuel system problem that needs to be resolved? Which size tanks are used in the V6 Dokotas.

It should be approx. 16 gals. If you take your VIN # into your local Dodge dealer they can give you a print out of every option on your truck

My ram has a tank that last about 525 to 600 miles, depending on the kind of driving before I have to fill up.

I can put a tad over 17 gallons in the tank when I run it till the gas light comes on in my '92 V6

Standard tank is 15 gal. - optional is 22 gal.

My '91 has a 22 gallon tank and like JEA said, run it till the light comes on and add 16-18 gallons (at around 300 miles). Gas gauge does not work until about 1/4 of a tank left, jumps all over till then, sounds like this gas gauge thing is not uncommon.

YEP, when the light comes on, I am usually around 300 miles on the tank.
I had a gas gauge problem too, but kinda opposite though. Would register full tank, but read dead empty with in 80 miles. The warning light operated correctly though (thank god). Ended up being a bad part of the fuel pump that was discovered while fixing another problem. Was talked into a new fuel pump, but that didn't fix the origional problem >:

I have a 95 dodge dakota,Just about 3 weeks ago
I put a new fuel pump and sending unit in truck
because fuel gage was not working. I thought the fuel tank was 15 gallons, but when I filled up
the gage at the pumps said that I took 17 gallons
whats up with this

Gary, when you pulled the old unit from the tank, did you not the position of the fuel sending unit? if you didn't pu the new onw in the same position it will be off.
as for the 15 gallon tank. you might have a sticker on the glovebox lid or you could contact a dealer with your VIN and they could tell you for sure what size your tank is. might be an 18 gallon.

Heres another example posting from 10/27/03 why are these old postings coming back lot of us including myself in the past never looked at post date just assumed current?? that blows my mine sure with others?? but anyone cares from 2003 to present 87-96 dakotas standard tank was 16 gallon with optional 22 galllon tank. Daddio you are the one if iam correct i responded to old post with some good humor in there not knocking you by any means we need a good laugh and not be so serious in life
