Message: My 1999 Dodge Dakota had a rattle that sounded like a water pump bearing, but it turned out to be the catalytic converter. The warranty is good for 8 years or 80,000 miles. I was told to replace the oxygen sensor ahead of the converter at the same time because that is the common reason for the cat. problem. If your truck has around 87,000 like mine did you have a wide price range for replacement. I spent $285.00 for cat., oxy. sens., and labor.

Message: My '97 also sounds like a diesel. Apparantly it's a leaking manifold or a broken gasket. I don't plan on getting it fixed. Unfortunately now there are other noises happening (rattling in the engine, etc) that are getting hard to pinpoint. Sorry that doesn't help too much, but you might want to look into a possible manifold problem.

Message: Mine did this for a while to. First thing they told me was something with the timing chain getting loose. They put in something to fix it, and the problem decreased. The other problem is related to ping. I put mid grade fuel in for just everyday driving, and premium when towing and the problem goes away. The Dodge guys also told me that the ping does not really hurt the engine, and had some document from Dodge saying the same thing.
BTW, sorry for the vague answer, but I am a newbie and still learning.

Message: It might be your belly pan (plenum) gasket in the bottom of the intake manifold. Causes lose of power, bad gas milage, and pinging.
