Subject: 3.9 V6 Powered Dune Buggy IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I am tossing an idea around. When I get back to the states I want to throw a V8 in my Dak and build a dune buggy. So, I thought, instead of building an unreliable 150 HP VW engine, I will take all my V6 stuff and have a reliable 200+ with a few budget mods I'll do while it's out. I would like to keep the fuel injection but not sure if that will all work out. Just in case it doesn't, are the parts available on the market to make it carbed? Does the premagnum manifold fit? Like I said I'm going to make every effort to keep the fuel injection work. Just a thought.

Message: Also, since there are different PCM's for auto and 5 speed, how can I get the PCM to work with the VW 4 speed transaxle? Can I just hook it all up and have the PCM JUST controling the fuel injection? This is one of those problems I was thinking of. Looks like the carb idea may work out better? I would like to avoid flashing the PCM. I'm spending enough on the small block for my truck. Would like to do the dune buggy on a budget.

Message: The Dune Buggy sounds like an interesting idea but
if you are going to build it yourself you might want to compare the actual weight of the engine against the power it makes. (example: a 400lb. engine making 200hp vs. a 200lb. engine making 150hp) As far as the trany goes don't limit yourself to one kind, Porshe makes an assortment of transaxles that have been mated to just about every kind of engine there is. Try looking up an old 914 that would be reliable for what your doing and it would be darn light. Finaly I don't see why fuel injection would be a problem, or for that why you would go backwards technologicaly and use a carb.

Message: The 150 HP Beetle Engine would cost around $4000 or $5000 if built right to handle the power. It would still be hard to keep it cool (air-cooled) and not very reliable. The torque though is about the same: 125 to 150 ft/lbs. With the V6 I would have well over 250 ft/lbs which is what I am looking for. The V6 I would have complete already from my truck and a VW transaxle is cheap and easy to build. My father in law has several of them (he is a bug freak) laying around. My only concern is still the tranny. The PCM also controls the tranny, right? So, if I take the Dodge tranny out and put a VW in it's place, won't the PCM say "Hey, where is the tranny?" and freak out? If so, then I might have to go carbed.

Message: i don't think the pcm wouldn't work the engine though....i don't know, just my guess...it might bring up some codes but who needs codes!! especially on a buggy!!
good luck!

Message: You probably already know that any air cooled engine will work the best in your sand rail. I currently have three, only one works right now though lol. 2 of them are running the vw engines on steel chassis, and i'm building an aluminum one right now. I have a motor from a polaris 700 RMK snow machine that is going in it. One of the guys in our "group" runs a corvette v8 in his. The thing sounds just crazy, and it sure draws alot of attention. It is pretty fast, but it runs really hot, and obviously it's too heavy to climb much. If your just going to do it becuase you have this engine lying around then go for it. But if you want to build the best one you can, then snow machine is the was to go.

Message: hi, this reminds me of the times back when. Everyone was looking to put more power and reliability int the dune buggies. I even remember one with a volvo engine in it. Now that"s reliable!
But seriously, just put a computer from a standard trans into the thing and try it out. At worse you'll have to replace a couple of axles(which I doubt) and at best you'll have a dune buggy that will have more power than any standard VW powerplant.
Hey wait a minute why limit yourself to the back wheels. Do a Four wheel drive buggy but midship the engine, use the 914 gearbox!

Message: I saw on one of the tv shows on spike tv, might have been extreme 4x4 where someone built a rock crawler using a saturn engine. It was small, light weight and capable of producing some good torque/hp.
berrien buggy? that in berrien springs michigan? that's where I used to go salmon fishing at when I lived in Indiana.

Message: I started that project a few years ago with a 3.9. Had trouble finding a bellhousing to fit the transaxle, when I did find one it was 450.00. By then I had built a stroked VW engine and slapped it on. Oh, BTW a Porche 914 trans is the same as a VW trans, except some 914 came with 5 gears and the cases were somewhat different.
