Subject: 1.7 RR & Shifting Problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I just installed the Crower 1.7 rockers on Saturday. The truck is a 2003 CC, 3.9, with an automatic trans.

After the install, I reset the computer and have been driving normally. I've put about 75 miles on the truck since then and haven't really felt any performance difference (though, my experience has been that it takes my computer quite a while to adjust to mods).

Anyway, it feels like the truck is now having trouble downshifting properly. I really need to push the gas pedal hard to get it to downshift. Otherwise, it bogs along in the higher gear. I did not have this problem before installing the rockers. Is it possible that this is part of the learning curve for the PCM? I'm not really sure what other connection there is between installing the rocker arms and having a shifting problem.

Any ideas?

By the way, the other mods to the truck are: Intense Performance CAI, V8 TB, 3923s (installed when I did the rockers), and the TPS mod (0.71v).

Did the probs happen after the TB went on as well? It's probably the result of the trans kick down cable not being adjusted right. See the link here on how to adjust it.

Thanks for the link.

The problem only started right after installing the rockers. I did the TB a few weeks ago and didn't notice a similar problem at that time. But it took a good week or so of normal driving for me to really notice a performance increase from the new TB.

Either way, thanks for the suggestion. I'll check the tension on the kick down cable to make sure it's adjusted right.

Did you have a similar problem (i.e., slow to downshift/staying in higher gear)?

I can't see for the life of me how RR's can change the shifting of the tranny. Like mtlcafan79 said, the tranny will mess up if the cable isn't adjusted right. I did that after I put on my 48mm throttle body and it made a world of difference with shifting.

Wouldn't want any other!

Thanks everyone. I'll have to take a look at the cable this weekend. Who knows, maybe I f--ked up the cable when pulling off the valve covers.

Hi Mario,

How did the RR install go? Did you bash in the baffles in the valve covers. Was it hard to do? Was the baffles the length of the valve cover? Has was the RR adjustments? Did you have to do adjust them twice? I am going to install 1.7 RR this Fri. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hi DUMBAZZZZZEs, (Geezz, you're very helpful. Maybe that's why you are not a member)

I did a search and I found what I wanted before. I thought I ask Mario how his install went. Its good and reasuring to hear from different people for advice. I believe your opinion doesn't help anyone but causes people not to seek advice and help from good and helpful people. Thanks for nothing anyway.

Mario,

the rockers shouldnt effect your shifting at all. Now, resetting the computer may effect it but i dont think as much as you are talking about. I think that you should re-adjust your throttle valve cable that goes to the throttle body.

Make a two day affare of it. Put the studs and washers in one evening with threadlock and let it set overnight. Then do the rockers. It's easier to turn the motor over with the sparkplugs out. I made a template of cardboard to go over the distributor(cap removed)with the plug towers marked. As the rotor button points to the plug tower, adjust that valve. Keep hand cranking the motor and do all the valves. Follow any instructions with the rocker as to setting the valves and you should be in good shape. Good luck.

Yeah, it seems like the throttle valve cable adjustment is the common theme here. I'll have to try adjusting it this weekend. I'll let you all know how it works out.

In other news, it seems to take FOREVER for my PCM to adjust. This morning (after 100 miles since the install) the truck popped through the TB when revving it at idle. I don't think the PCM is giving me more fuel yet to compensate for the additional air flow (intake and exhaust). It was the same thing as when I did the CAI and the TB.

NJQCDak: The install went fine. It took me much longer than it should have (probably about 5 hours start to finish), but I was VERY careful to double and triple check things along the way. The truck only has about 3200 miles on it, so I was a bit nervous with the idea of messing with it. Anyway, my need for speed got the better of me and I HAD to do the project!

The baffles run the full lenth of the valve covers and are a pretty heavy guage metal. I laid the covers on my workbench and took a five pound hammer to the baffles. With the big hammer, I didn't need to hit it all that hard and the wide face of the hammer was almost exactly the width of the baffle.

As for the adjustment, I did do them twice (actually did the #1 cyl three times). The process was easy enough - adjust one cyl at a time when both intake and exhaust valves are closed. I readjusted them because when I finished the adjustments the first time, the exhaust valve on the #1 cyl seemed out of adjustment. Turns out, the lifter leaked out. So I cranked the engine around a few times (with the coil disconnected and the plugs out) until oil started coming out of the pushrod (to make sure that the lifters were fully pumped up) and readjusted all the valves. I did the #1 cyl a third time b/c the that lifter leaked out again. Brand new engine with 3200 miles and I have a lifter that won't stay pumped up ... maybe it needs a little Viagra.

Well, that was my rocker installation experience. I just hope the performance increases will show up soon and make it all seem worthwhile!

IntenseDak39: Greg, whatcha got in the truck now? That looks a little bigger than a 3.9!

I spoke with Sam at SoCalDakota and he explained how to adjust the cable. Also, mtlcafan79 posted a link to a description at Speedtweaks on how to adjust.

If I have a problem this weekend I'll be sure to post again.

Thanks for the help!

Greg, good luck with dropping in the new motor. Keep us updated on your progress!

Mario/Deep Purple,

Thanks for the great advice. I started to dis-assemble the valve covers and noticed that one the of the stud/nuts was rusted to a different size which happens to be the driver's lower rear nut. I couldn't get it off. I decided to go to a mechanic to get the work done later this week. I plan to provide all the advice everyone gave so he doesn't make a mistake. God, the dak is only 3 years old. Thanks for insight on the valve covers. Good luck with the TV adjustment. I heard this is the main cause for most shifting problems.

Intensedak39,

Nice looking engine, great detailing. I'm jealous. I wish MP made valve covers for V6s. Good luck with the install.
