Subject: Wheel Bearing
IP: Logged

Message:
Question.. The passenger side wheel bearing on my V6 2WD Dakota is bad. I purchased an inner and outer wheel bearing and the seal from Autozone. But my do-it-yourself manual is telling me that the whol hub/wheel bearing assembly has to be replaced that just doing the actual wheel bearings can't be done....Can anyone tell me why the parts store has just the wheel bearings available for replacement if the whole assembly is needed? Thanks for the help!!

I'm not going to speak for everyone but you can't just change out the bearings alone. The unit is sold as a set. It's considered a wheel/hub assembly. If your succesful doing that, let us all know how you did it.

Wouldn't want any other!

At least my Dak has bearings, 1996 2wd, but I don't know if they changed them on later years.

What year is your Dak?

Mine is a 1998 2WD (lousy in the snow unless I have weight in the back, but I still love it). I found out that, unless you are an ace mechanic (which I am not) and you have a press, like they have in a machine shop, forget about just changing the bearings by themselves. Yesterday, the only place I could find the whole assembly was at a dealership for $165.00, AND they have to order it... if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all!! :)

Yes it is a hub assembly, but no you do not have to buy the whole thing. Buy the bearings, and find a shop: NAPA, mechanic, etc, and have them press out and install the new to your existing hub assembly. Unless the bearings completly tore out the hub assembly wall your are good to do this. Replacing the whole hub assembly is like having dodge replace the whole control arm for your ball joints, expensive unneeded work. Good luck

I repaced my front right wheel hub last month because the bearings went bad. Yes, you do have to replace the entire wheel hub, unless you do what pbxr did.

I think the reason the parts store had just the bearings is because the 4wd are different from the 2wd. I'm not sure though, just guessing.

I wish I had alot of neat tools!! Just the wheel bearings can be replaced, but of course, it is recommended that the whole assembly be replaced. I personally think it's because somebody is getting a kick back somewhere... oh well.

it can't be that bad? i used to do that to lod Gm products all the time. the only hard part was knocking the old bearing races out. nothing a good 2# maul and a punch or chisel couldn't handle.

I have a shop here at my work. Me and some friends tried it for a while to get the keeper that holds the bearings in, out. There must be some kind of tooling to do that. Also theres a really good bearing shop where I live and the bearing part # wise didn't happen. They are Timco bearings and for some Dodge reason that particular bearing wasn't available. They could find a different type but they said it wouldn't be guarenteed to be right and with all the trouble I was going through I just said F... it and put a new hub on. Glad to hear NAPA can do it.

Wouldn't want any other!

Yeah, I bought the bearings from Advance, I believe they were Timkens, direct fit. God love bearing numbers, and the cross referrance books. My local NAPA is very good, they have a nice little shop of their own. I guess that is the perk of living in a small KY town, hehe. I have done extensive searches on the net for a cheaper hub assembly, other than from dodge, no luck. That is why I figured well you replace bearings and not the whole assembly on other parts why not this. So far over 55k miles on the new bearings and not a squeek. It really bothers me that dodge holds and keeps the rights of parts from the aftermarket. That reason alone will always make me look for an alternative.
Good luck to all.

Thank you all for your comments. I ended up buying the entire hub/wheel bearing assembly from a dealership thirty (30) miles away. After calling every auto parts store within 50 miles, the dealership, believe it or not, was the only one that had one in stock. They managed to rip me for $169.06 (that includes tax). I guess I shouldn't bitch to much, this is the first time it's been replaced and I have 166,000 miles on my baby. She's been real good to me!!! In fact the only thing I've had to do is brakes (of course), I'm on my third set (front and back) tires, (fourth set) and regular maintenance!! and my dak has been paid for now for over a year.. can't beat it.

I understand that Dakota 97 to 03 2wd front uses Autozone? Timken Set 49, Carquest BCA 513058, or Pepboys FW115 bearings. Some may say CR (Chicago Rawhide) before the FW115. The (Carquest) 513058 and the SKF FW115 bearings are Canadian made and have the same part number on them but the Vol number is different. Approx $40 to $50 dollars in price. Check it out guys.

fyi...it looks like Autozone sell the entire bearing/hub assembly as well. This is what came up for a '98 4x4:
Timken HA599361 $189.99 1 year warranty
Timken OPTIONAL - LEFT SK450101 $125.99
Timken OPTIONAL - RIGHT SK450100 $125.99

Not sure what the difference is between the first one and the last two (besides left and right), but I thought somebody could use this info.

The local parts store said that replacing the bearings ( pressing ) can sometimes be a hassle and you end up wrecking bearings in the process. Do it a couple of times and you've paid for a hub assembly.

Of course, always the skeptic, I see that it can be done if you find a competent bearing guy. I'd much rather replace the bearings than have to pitch for a hub assembly.

I'll never know why anyone would think that bearings shouldn't be a serviceable part.

Mike, the manufacturers do that to save time putting them together. I drive a Freghtliner and the front bearings are the same on it, except whole lot bigger. Not to mention a lot more expensive. (about 1000 dollars for just one side)
