Subject: Flowmaster 70 or Gibson Muffler?? IP: Logged
Message: Well I'm ramping up my search for a Muffler on my:
03 Dakota V6 3.9L CC SXT 4X4
I have a homebrew intake with K&N
and a few other common mods.
I'm looking to balance out the "In/Out" and was told the Muffler is the next logical step (with upgraded TB as 2nd in line)
I am debating between:
Flowmaster 70 Series #52571
and
Gibson #16590 (Alum) or #616590 (Stainless Steel)
I will be Keeping All Stock Pipes and am just looking for a replacement muffler.
I don't want: Ricer or Obnixious sound. Just a bit more balance in the system and maybe some added rumble. As well as hopefully a bit more off the line kick (just a tad, don't need to cook the tires off it)
Anyone have any tips/ideas?
Thanks

Message: yeah, get a dynomax if you want to buy a new muffler in 20,000 miles when the fiberglass packing burns out

Message: I have the 70 series with no cat and I like it, but it's pretty quiet with the cat. When I had the cat on it, it didn't sound quite as loud and ricey, but still sounded good. It is a direct replacement though, which makes it a nice cheap mod. I like mine, but there is probably better mufflers out there. Just my .02

Message: Sledge, I weld up mufflers for a living and can tell you that the only people that down a flowmaster is the ones that have not tried it. A flowmaters has a one of a kind rumble to it that you can tell right a way. If you go with the flowmaster then you will be happy. I would also like to say that there is other good mufflers out there on the market. Hooker makes a good deep sounding muffler as well as Dynomax. I think Gibson is below Flowmaster, Hooker and Dynomax and cost to much.

Message: Muffler gut:
Thanks for the input. I've heard varying stories about how those Flowmasters hold up. You have any professional insight?
Also what if I used some undercoating on it as most cars/trucks now do to their mufflers??
I traded in a 96 Sebring for my Dak and never replaced one part of the Exhaust System on an 8 year old car because of the undercoating!

Message: I also have heard stories about the flowmaster quailty but if you get 409 Stainless Steel, you will never have to worry about a thing. I never seen one my self that did not hold up but there is some out there. All I do to ensure the exhaust will last a long time is, put a good coating of high quailty paint where my welds are. Other than that, it should last a long time.

Message: I don't really know what muffler sounds better over my flowmaster because I have nothing to compare it to. However, when I installed my 70, just for fun i put on a 40 I had laying around and it sounded like SH*T! With my 70 series on, I had a guy ask me at a gas station if it was a v8. I'd say it is probably as close to a v8 sound as you can get for a v6. It's not noisy in the cab either. You really can't go wrong with getting a Flowmaster. After all, it's less than a $100 out the door.

Message: would the flowmaster 50 delta flow be too loud, or is the 70 series closer to a real v8 sound. which helps performance more?

Message: I wish I could tell you for sure which is better. In my experience, Flowmasters sound good just about every series. The 70's are not loud, but I don't know if you want it loud or not so I can't for sure tell you what to get. When I tried the 40's it had a lot more "whind...popopopop" noise to it and sounded more ricey.

Message: The flowmaster 50 is almost the identical sound
as a dynomax just slightly deeper.
Low tone at low rpm & idle
quite while crusing
can hear it rap when you get on it over 2000 rpm
The 40 is a loud muff if you like loud.
70 would be same as stock sound with a little less
restriction.
The magnaflow is just a little louder than the
dyno or flowmaster, not much same charecteristics
through the rpm range
You can run a factory tail pipe or just a turn down
in the end of the muff will give you a deeper sound
Hope that helps

Message: Larry/others:
Very Good. I think I'll shoot to do a 70 Series, the Stock muffler sounds pretty good anyway, but to ease up on the restriction is what I'm shooting for.
Even stock when I pulled up the driveway when a buddy came out from NY to see me he said "Man the exhaust sounds nice" I think the Flowmaster 70 is exactly what I'm looking for!
