Subject: Backfireing through the intake- O2? IP: Logged
Message: I recently bought a 1996 Dakota. 3.9 V-6. It spits and backfires through the intake. Only at lower RPM's. I know it is running rich. The only code that comes up is the front O2 sensor. I have had 3 on the truck so far. Anybody got any ideas, or am I just getting a bad part?

Message: Sounds like the Timing is Whacked! OR worn/loose/misaligned timing chain. Very well could be Burnt Intake valves also (Not sealing)
How many miles?
Next time a Honduh wants to race Ask him how many sheets of plywood he can haul?

Message: check the cap and rotor for carbon tracks and
check all the wires for wear points where the
spark could jump and the plugs
If you keep getting the code while running you
may have a bad wire.
could also be a bad dist bushing
How many miles on the truck

Message: Guess I should explain a little better. This is more of an intermediate problem. I have did the usual tune-up. Cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Compression checks good. Fuel pressure checks. A local garage found one injector bad. I replaced it. Another garage pulled the codes, came up front O2 sensor. Someone had took the cat off and the sensor wasn't there. So I had the exhaust put back on right. Seemed to help for a bit. Couple of weeks later it started again. Code said O2. Put another on, helped for a bit again.
Doesn't happen all the time. It just happens when I am running around at a lower rpm. It will be running good and then all of a sudden it starts to miss a little. Almost cutting out. Then it will pop and spit through the intake. It's loading up with fuel. A buddy of mine was behind me one day when it started that. Told me the next day he could smell gas real bad.
Going to try one more O2 sensor. Guess after that it's going back to the garage. Haven't been able to leave it, only vehicle I have, and the wife working a different shift.
Thanks for the help.

Message: Sounds like your describing a bad Throttle Position Sensor (On side of TB) sending false signals to the computer.

Message: Will that cause an O2 sensor code?
Last time I had it at the garage, the guy hooked up a high dollar hand-held diagnostic tool to it. At first he couldn't find anything. After it ran for a minute, the front O2 was showing "rich". He said it should be bouncing back and forth between rich and lean. That would show it was adjusting itself? Something like that.
The little scanner they use at Auto Zone always comes up O2.
Thanks again.

Message: Two things can be happening:
1) The O2 is bad and stuck at RICH
2) The system is indeed RICH and the O2 is reporting that
The first one can be fixed by replacing the O2, but the second could be lots of things. Leeky injector, TPS, etc. It will take a little diagnostic work to find it out for sure.

Message: Thanks. Sounds like if the O2 sensor doesn't fix it this time, it's off to the garage.
Have you had "new" O2 sensors to go bad within a week or 2 of installing it?

Message: I got a 96. if one injector is bad the rest are sure to follow. mine ran rich. it was a bad wire going to the the iat sensor. when it got hot it thought it was still cold and ran like crap until it just cut off.

Message: What is the iat sensor??
I used to consider myself a "fair" mechanic. Worked on almost everything. Did it for a living for a few years. Mostly heavy equipment. Give me back a carburetor and a set of points.

Message: when you have the distributer backwards it will backfire though the intake.... If there was a major prob with the timing it would shop up at the 02 because the o2 would read funny beings the screwey ignition of gas....

Message: Thanks for the input guys. I changed the O2 sensor today. Was black from running too rich. Didn't seem to help as much this time. Tired of fighting with it. She is going to the garage in the next few days! I'll post the problem when it get's fixed. Thanks again.

Message: Garage says it is the computer now. Dealer wants $580 for it. Napa, Advance or the other places can't get it. Any ideas besides the junk yards?

Message: The computer does not seem logical to me I would get a second opinion. It sounds more like a bad sensor that they haven't located.
