Subject: Engine Troubles IP: Logged
Message: Ok here's the deal:
I'm driving like usual no changes in habits, then while crusing, I accelerate only to hear the engine roaring. It's making the sound like it does when you crank it up every now and then. It sounds like it just grew to a V8... Well I'm like, thats strange, it'll calm down like usual. No such luck.
I hit the gas, and my engine is friggin roaring. The thing is, it's not idling fast, just ultra responsive in the low end and lacking in the mid. and top from normal. Cruising above the 2500 rpm range is loud, like people look at me. It's as if the engine is gulping air in the beginning and hitting the gas isn't letting anymore air in after a point, so it's like not really jumping once I get to the mid. or top end. Tried reseting the PC, didn't help.
Please diagnose or help if you can. Thanks.

Message: Have you checked to see if the fan clutch is working properly. Occasionally the fan clutch on my Dakota seems to not function the way it should and it sounds as if the motor is screaming at relatively low RPM's. It seems to happen on mine when the truck is first started after sitting for some time. Possibly, in your case, the power loss at higer RPM's could be from the drag the fan is putting on the enjine. Its worth a shot.

Message: I think your right. I had my friend look at it before reading your post. We went for another ride and popped the hood, and everytime we gave it gas the fan was turning in time w/ the motor. It was really blowing leaning over the engine. Once he said thats what it could be, I thought it was obvious that the fan clutch wasn't working.
Looks like I have to drop my truck off at the dealership for an under warranty fix unless I can make it stop. Or I could do it for less than my $50 deductible that I'm sure they'll make me pay.
So new question: Can it be replaced for less than $50 or can I fix it cheap? Thanks.

Message: It would depend on what part (or parts) it actually needs. If you have to buy the fan or the clutch (i'm not sure if it is one unit or not) it would probably be more than the fifty just for parts. You could try pricing the parts first and see what they would stand you. Most likly the dealer will not fix what parts you have, they will replace them and be done with it. I have not actually looked into having mine fixed since it has only done it a couple of times and has not done it recently.

Message: Way more than $50. The Fan clutch alone runs around $75 depending on which 1 you have. Then IF you can get lucky it will come off without having to remove the Water Pump.
Pay the Stealership the $50 and be happy you have the warranty :)

Message: Thanks guys you've been helpful. Looks like now the problem has been diagnosed and just needs to be solved. I just have to find time to bring the Dak to the dealership and deal w/ some other vehicle till I get my baby back. :(
