Subject: Wont shift? IP: Logged
Message: Ok i own a 93' 3.9L V6 magnum automatic ext cab. It has 127k miles on it and whenever I start taking off with it like of mornings when it has been sitting for a while it will go and then wont shift into the next gear. It will be like im goin down the road and when its time for it to jump in the next gear it will sit there and rev up higher and the rpms will jump up and i practically got to let off the gas in order for it to shift into the next gear? But after ive ran it for a while then its fine and it will hit on every gear. Just keep in mind this is an AUTOMATIC here. I myself thought possibly that i need to change my plugs, caps, and rotors (somewhat of a tune up deal)? Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Message: NO~! Do yourself a BIG BIG favor and never add anything to your tranny fluid!!!
I added Lucas Stop Slip to a tranny that was only having minor problems and it wouldn't shift at all after that. Took 3 Fluid Flushes/Filter changes before it acted right!
It's called Converter drainback. The fluid from your Torque Converter drains back into your pan after it has set for a while. When you start it up you have a Torque Converter with 1/2 Air & it sloshes your fluid into a froth. Until the fluid displaces the Air and purges the system it won't shift properly.
Solution: Shift Kit
Shift Kits start @ $20 at www.bulkpart.com for the TransGo Shift Kit jr (which will fix your problem) all the way up to the Complete ReProgram Kit which runs $98. I'm understanding that both Shift Kits require Tranny Removal. The Shift Kit Jr primarily deals with the Valve body. You can do the work on the valve body without using the rest of the Kit Since the problem appears to be just in the Valve Body. The Only thing that the tranny has to be removed for is to replace an Orifice Screen on the O/D Housing and Over Drill a Fluid Hole.
A Fluid/Filter change probably won't hurt either. Spend the extra few $'s and go to a Stealership and buy the ATF+3. Pennziol, Quakerstate, Castrol and Supertech all have ATF+3 brands. The Only 2 I trust are the Stealership's and Quakerstate.
Good Luck,
Shank

LMFAO!! thats definitely true especially my dad being a Contractor :)
So how big a deal is taking transmission apart? Because i didnt plan on doing this myself because im not too mechanically inclined myself. I was gonna just have the local repair shop do it but i was just checkin to see what kinda of problem you guys thought it was and that I have a clue as to what to tell them whats wrong. So I may slip in there and see what they say if i explain it to them as it may need a new shift kit?

Message: I believe theres a valve that holds you'r trans fluid in the converter. You can just have the seals replaced on that valve. Your dealerships trans guy should know all about it.

Message: 93dakota,
I've had this same problem before. You don't need a shift kit. Unless you have an old lady and you want an excuse to put one in. :-) Your problem is that your trans fluid is just too old to do what it needs to anymore. Drop the pan, drain it, change the filter, and refill with new fuild. Walla! Fixed. I had a problem with 2nd gear. I could put it to the floor and it would scream to 9000 and still not shift. (Not really, but you get what i'm saying.) I had to let off the gas and then it would go into 3rd. Granted this on a full size Bronco, (yes, yes everyones needs a beater vehicle sometime in their life.) but transmissions are all the same to some point. Atleast the problems they may have. Some more so than others, but the same problems, none the less.
P.S. "Stealerships"... LMAO

Message: MoparDude340... I had exactly this problem. A change of fluid did the trick. I had 77,000 miles since my last fluid change. My trans holds 10.5 quarts and I only replaced 4 so I will be doing a pump and dump again shortly. Thanks for your help
