Subject: Girl Needs Help IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys. I don't have a brother to ask so help me if you can.
I recently bought a '99 4cyl/5 spd with 35K miles. I get a noise that is like the grind or whine described in another topic but mine is different. It is a loud "sandy" sort of buzz that only comes when I shift at low RPMs, like when I stop completely and shift into 1st gear, unless I hold down the clutch a little while accelerating the buzz is right there. When the clutch is down a little it goes away. Also when I shift into a gear at a lower speed (like shifting at 15mph into 2nd gear, or at 20something mph into 3rd gear, etc...) so is this a vibration thing? You know the deep bass sound you'd here at this point? I get the bass but it is simultaneous with the buzz.
In the morning or for the first few miles of the day it's not there. But soon enough it begins and I'm forced to accelerate with more clutch down than normal or else my car buzzes like a bitch.
How serious ($$$) is this problem?
The tow hitch nob thing, is well used and bent as if the owner before me towed alot...
Bearings? Transmission? Gears? Help!!!

Message: It sounds like your throwout bearing, it is a bearing surface that is between your clutch fork and clutch. The clutch is spinning with the motor and your clutch fork, the part that moves when you press the clutch, is mounted to the trans.
If the throwout bearing starts to go out it can make noises when it is contacting the clutch. If it goes away when you have the clutch to the floor but comes back when you take your foot off, then you need to get an adjustment. It should not touch the clutch when the clutch pedal is up.
If it makes noise whenever you step on the clutch, then the throwout bearing is bad.

PS: you should not touch the clutch pedal while driving except to change gears. Putting pressure on the clutch may cause it to slip which will make it wear out faster.

Message: When my clutch starting acting something like that, the dealer decided the whole clutch needed to be replaced. Well the throwout bearings were bad, and the clutchplate... Long story short, it cost me about $400 for that. But I was really PO'ed about the price I had some other stuff fixed, under warranty and not. I argued and they gave me 10% off the total.
Morals: baby your clutch (most of the time),
stay out of deep water, argue about the price (they have money more money that you, they can afford to cut you a deal, right?) Good luck

Message: The throw out bearing bad at 35K miles? I have the same transmission (though different clutch) in my 3.9 and it had 93K miles on it before I started having any problems. If it's the bearing, you may want to make sure they check the rear main seal of the engine too, to make sure it's not leaking oil on it and contaminating the grease.
The transmission has to be dropped out of the truck to replace the bearing; that's probably a lot of labor $$, so you may want to see what they'll charge to replace the clutch too while they're in there. The bearing itself is around $15, but it's a decent-sized job to get to it.
