If not there it's time to get dirty. Pull the Diff cover and it's stamped on the Large Gear. Most came with a 3.55 gear

Probably a good time to clean it also. There is a Large magnet on the inside of the diff cover and every one I have pulled off is ALWAYS covered in a metallic sludge (normal wear & tear).

Good Luck,
Shank

If it's a round cover, it's an 8 1/4. If it's an octagonal cover, it's a 7 1/4. Gear ratio is probably between 2.94 and 3.55

The 8 1/4 is a much better rear end. The 7 1/4 is really only suitable for very light duty applications.

Thank you guys for all the help, I thought I posted this question earlier but obviously I didn't since it is not showing up. But I'm looking at a 95 dakota, V6/auto. The guy who is selling (for $700), he said it was ticking like lifters do, and he put oil in it. (When we looked at it, it was about 2-3qt's over full) After he did that it wouldn't start.

Now I know on the newer fords, they have a safty "switch" in them that once they get so low on oil and after they shut off they do not start again. I didn't know if this could be part of the reason, or if it was something serious. Anyhelp will be very thankful. I'm trying to get information on this before I buy this motor.

I have some other questions about this type of motor, considering I drive a GEN 1. But I do not need to know the information right off hand. Like the max lift possible. The max bore. What type of HP and TQ I can get out of this motor. Like I said, thank you.

Sorry about all the questions, I'm new and I'm trying to figure everything out. Please have patients with me, and my bad spelling.

What you guys are talking about is REAREND stuff.

This guy wants to know about REARNED stuff. That's a whole different subject.

If it's not running $700 is a pretty big gamble. There are a Ton of internal things that may have been fried! Sounds like he may have run it without Oil and tried to overcompensate by adding too much.

I bought a '93 Dak for $800. The guy said it was running like $h1T so He pulled the distributor to replace the guide bushing. When he did he pulled out the spline gear and didn't get it in the right position when he replaced the assembly. I figured I could get a decent truck and set the timing right. I got it to the shop and back together properly just to find out the valves are burnt. That was the reason it was running like $h1T.

Anyway, I'm taking the good running bone stock 3.9 from my 4X4 to put in this other truck to re-sell. This gave me the excuse to dump the $500 into a performance rebuild for my truck :)

So the computer doesn't have a safty cut off switch in it? Even if it doesn't run its worth the $700. He has about $ 3 grand in apperance parts on it. If I can get it running thats great, if not I have a 318 I can drop down in her. =) If I have another other questions I'm sure I'll be asking here. Thanks for the help.

Don't take it personal Smoht, There is plenty of people that waste their time adding their SM@RTA$$ comments on this board.

If you would like some suggestions and my Opinion, Feel free to e-mail me. I will let you in on my Mod's of the V6. It will be easier to Mod & Re-Build the existing engine than try to drop in a V8. It's much more complicated than it sounds and will cost double to go the V8 route. Click my Profile to get my e-mail addy.
