Message: Ok all you V6 owners just want to get some honest opinions on the driveabilty of the 3.9 V6 . Is this engine strong enough to do a decent job of pushing a Quad cab 4 X 2 with 3.92 gearing ? It has all the extras I need including the extra cooling for oil and tranny and tow group . With the rebates for these up to $4500 I am contemplating the purchase of a new one . How is the general reliability of this engine , I know it is a chopped 318 which has been great in my full size van . With the rebates and the trade in for this I can probably get this for 13000-14000 dollars . I am looking for opinions on the stock motor not after modifying it . Thanks a lot .

Message: I've owned my 3.9 since it was new in '94. I had the oil light start to come on and had the pump changed(under warr.). They did't get the pump on exactly right & within a week or two I ended up with a knock. Had to have the whole lower end rebuilt (under warr.). Before i took it in, I drove it as hard as I could to try and finish it off but it wouldn't blow! So I guess the engine can take a beating & keep on ticking. I've got the 3.90 rear end and I pulled my boat up to Michigan several times (about 3500lbs) (I've got the towing package too). I've had it overloaded with the springs upside down and it moved just fine. I did take it easy that time.

Message: When it comes to pulling, these 3.9's are workhorses. They are one strong pulling engine for a v6

Message: I have a 2003 club cab Dakota 4x2 wih a five speed and 3.55 gears. This summer a towed a 1800lb trailer with about an additional 800lbs of gear in the back. It was a little sluggish on the grades but over-all not that bad. When its not loaded the 3.9 is very adequate for noprmal use.

That's the key phrase "Not Loaded"

Message: Would it be better to wait and get a 3.7 liter V6 which has more hp and torque ? Any known problems with this engine which has been used in the 1500's for 2 or 3 years now , I know it's basically a chopped 4.7 liter . I know buy a V8 but as gas prices keep rising the mpg does become somewhat of a issue , The 3.7 is at least rated at 22 mpg highway for the 4 X 2 .

Message: Dear god yes, wait for the 3.7 in the QC.
Honestly, think about resale in this case. The 3.9L w/ 3.92 in my 02 RC gets about 16 - 17mpg. Just fine for me and it has been loaded often and runs all right. But a QC loaded might be another story; I only wish they had gone with the 3.7 earlier than 2004. Seriously considering getting an 04 for the 3.7, but if I do that I might as well get the 4.7 that I wanted. Then I should really wait to get a QC with the Hemi in a few years.

Message: I drove a 2003 Quad 4 X 2 with a 4.7 in it and man that moves right along . Plenty strong for any application , think it's rated to tow over 5000 lbs .Great acceleration . Haven't had a chance to drive a 3.7 yet but would think it would be strong enough for most applications except real heavy towing . How is the 42RLE tranny that comes with the 3.7 ? Has this been around a long time ? Same one used on the 3.9 ??????
