Subject: Rotor problems related to asbestos?
IP: Logged

Message:
My mechanic claims that he has seen a direct correlation with the switch from asbestos containing pads to more/higher metal compound pads, and problems with rotors, especially with pitting. Any of you old timers notice the same?

Yes. The Old Asbestos pads were easier on your rotors. BUT, you can use organic pads that are just as easy except they wear out faster (about 25-40K depending on your driving habits) Semi-Metallic pads last about twice as long but usually wear grooves in your rotors by the time the pads need replaced.

Pro Vs. Con

Organic pads cheaper, Metallic more expensive.
Organic Pads work better, Metallic pads work.
Metallic pads glaze over w/too much heat, Organic pads disentigrate w/too much heat.
Organic pads absorb moisture in air, most noticible on 1st time you hit brakes in morning, Metallic do not.
2 sets of organic pads for every set of rotors, Metallic 1-1. Rotors may not have to be replaced, just turned. Rotors can only be turned once.

Your decision. I replaced the Pads & Rotors on my Jeep. It was cheaper for a set of Organic Pads AND New Rotors than a set of Semi-Metallic & turning the old rotors.

I personally prefer Organic pads, They may not last as long but I notice a difference in wear and Stopping Ability. Organic pads don't NORMALLY squeal and Grind like the metallic do.

Just my 2c
