Subject: TPS causing erratic idle when cold? IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
Check-engine light is off, but I am getting a code : P0121.
I know this is related to the TPS. When starting cold, it revs
erratically (between about 700 and 1300 RPM's). While
driving, it shifts into and out of overdrive a lot (even when
going UNDER 30 MPH). On the highway, in overdrive, the
RPM's are all over the place.
Will changing the TPS fix this ya think? If so, where can I
buy a TPS? Anywhere online, or does NAPA carry 'em?
Thanks much!

Message: You didn't list a part number for the TPS.
Also, are you suggesting that I need to replace all those sensors (IAT, IAC, MAP)?
Thanks

Message: Just go to Autozone about $30 made by wells a good
part
No just replace the TPS not all the sensors that
would be a waist of money

Message: Thanks Larry...too bad I don't have an Autozone nearby. Closest one is about 40 miles.
I'll check the local shops though.
Should be as easy as unscrewing the old one and screwing in the new one, right?
Thanks

Message: Yes, It's as simple as taking off the Old one and Screwing on the New 1. You will need a Torx wrench, I beleive it is a T25 but I haven't done one in a while. Make Sure you disconnect the battery before you start unplugging connections.
While your at it, pull the Idle Air Controller (IAC) off the back of the TB and clean the carbon build-up off the Tip. Be careful not to push the plunger in. You will understand when you pull it out.
It may be time for an Intake Overhaul. Open the butterfly on the TB and take a flashlight and look down inside the Intake. A Lil Oil is normal wear & tear. A healthy coating of Oil is a sign your bellypan gasket is shot. If you pull the intake to replace the bellypan gasket go ahead and spend the $2 for a TB gasket and pull it off also to clean it thouroughly.
by the code, it tells me that you have a '97 or newer, NEW doesn't really matter, How many miles?
Do a search on the Board for "bellypan or Plenum Gasket" I have posted the steps several time on how to replace it.
Good Luck,
Shank

Message: Yep, it's a 2000 V6 CC. 72K miles
I'll check the TB when I get in there this afternoon. I'm hoping it's all clean and shiny...cuz I don't want to mess with it...just want to get it running well so I can sell it!
Thanks for the help!
