Subject: Fan Removal Question IP: Logged
Message: Anyone know how to remove the clutch fan on the V6 without buying the special tool? I tried just turning the nut off but the water pump pully spun as well. Any thoughts? Anyone have any luck doing this?

Message: the haynes book says that on newer models you can apply pressure by pulling up on the surpentine belt.....could not on my 98,though....i gave up on that project and returned the electric fan:(

Message: I know, mine said that too. Haynes people must have small hands, I can't get ahold of the belt and wrench on the nut at the same time. Must need a second person.. hmm...

Message: get a long pry bar and put it in between two of the smaller pully bolts, get a open wrench or a big fu----- cresent and turn the counter clock wise. Yes it is always good to have an extra pair of hands. If you pry on the pully, you might bend it or trash your water pump if you apply to much presure. Trust me you do want to make this mod, it is very well worth the money and the time.

Message: I am thinking about removing my fan but have a couple of quick questions as well...
1) The electric fan that is already there kicks in at 200F? or is it 210F?
2) Do I need to find a nut the same size as the one on the fan to prevent anything from flying of my engine? if so what size?

Message: No nut is needed. Think the fan kicks in at closer to 220.

Message: My electric fan comes on at wierd times... but then, I've got an odd truck :0)
Mine, for some reason, seems to turn on about 190-200, or always when the cooling fan is on. For some reason my AC compressor runs _constant_ unless the enviromental control is set to OFF. Is that normal? Dodge said it was, doesn't seem to hurt anything. Just... seemed odd.

Message: Yeah, except mine runs when it's set to Defrost, heat, _or_ A/C! Although I shouldn't complain, and I'm not, since defrost works _real good_ when your sucking the humidity out of the air!

Message: If you dont care about reusing the clutch, take a dremel tool and slice the nut open carefully (try not to cut the threads of the water pump). Then use a large screwdriver and pry open the slice. The fan clutch nut will come right off...

Message: You dont need no wrench. All you need is a big hammer and a long punch not chisel and hit is a couple times on edge of the nut it will come loose remember its left hand threads so when u standing looking at the engine hit it on the left side then spin the fan and voile!

Message: ok first thing. Don't take the belt off. Pull the oil dipstick out so you don't break it. Take a 1-7/16 wrench and put the open end on the fan nut. Have the wrench pointing straight up. Take a hammer, a big hammer about 3 lbs. and hit the crap out of it. The wrench should fly off and hit the inside of the fender or hit the floor. It might take a couple of time but it will come off. This is how we do it at Cox Dodge.
oh yeah make sure yo say (four) before you swing and swing like you are playing base ball.
Seriously I'm not joking
