Message: Me and a buddy gave up after 3 long tedious hours and skinned knuckles. The suggestions provided may work on a newer street driven truck? My 3.9 powered 93' 4x4 has lived most of it's life on the mud trails, so that dammed 11 yr old nut has welded on via corrosion. It wouldn't move after bending and shearing off the pulley bolts, bending the XXXL Craftsman screwdriver permanately. Mine was Impossible! My solution was to remove the 4 bolts that hold the fan so it can be pushed against the engine and suspend with wire. I used a saw-all with an 8" "Lenox" diamond blade and cut in the slot between the nut and clutch fan; cut slow and plumb, stopping periodically to check the cut & cool/oil the cutting (avoid cutting into the clutch fan as it's filled with silicone fluid and can be pressurized? After 10 minutes voola - off it went into the garbage pail- no more fan. I kept the nut on and rounded the cut with a file. If desired splice cut the nut with a "Dremel" and remove. While doing this, I had the rad and shroud out so a new rad & elec fan could go in place. Wear Goggles, cut slow to avoid sparks - Good idea removing battery and combustables!!!!Good Luck!

Message: I made the mistake of not taking the fan off before removing the water pump for replacement. What I had to do was hit the nut with a punch and a hammer a few good times in a counterclockwise direction. This was tricky while trying to balance the whole assembly. Once I hit the nut a few times it loosened up enough so I could put a large screw driver in the fins of the impeller on the back side of the pump, for leverage, and simply use a 10" channel lock plier to turn the nut off. Thanks for all the advice from all of you on the site. It helped a lot. 1999 Dakota ext cab 2wd 5.2 V8
