Subject: Help! serious drop in fuel mileage IP: Logged
Message: My truck sat for about 5 months while I was away at school. I started it once in a while and let it idle but for the most part it did nothing for half a year. Anyways, now that I'm driving it again I've noticed a serious drop in fuel mileage. I used to average 20 between city and freeway now I'm only getting about 16.5 average. I'm not a hard driver and only go between 70-75 on the freeway. My truck is a stock 2000 SLT automatic w/48,000 miles. I've already changed the coolant and oil. BTW I always use Mobil 1 full synth and my K&N filter is clean. Does anyone have an idea of what could be the problem with it? I've given the ECU plenty of time and mileage to relearn the fuel curve. I was thinking of changing plugs, wires, and going to the FiveO Motorsports new 6 hole injectors. I'm already running 3923 plugs with maybe 20,000 on them. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Message: The O2 will do that, they recomend replacing them
at 60,000 but they can fail prematurly especialy
if you run any type of cleaner through the system
it will build up on the O2 and it will not read
right.
A pluged cat?
A bad IAT will also affect milage, there are a
number of things that can affect mileage.

Message: I've already replaced the O2 If I remember correctly it was the one after the cat, whichever was less expensive of the 2.
There's no way I'm replacing my cat, I live in michigan and we dont have emmissions testing. Will removing it with a straight pipe effect performance at all?
How expensive is it to replace the IAT sensor?

Message: The Intake Air Sensor runs about $22 @ Autozone. It's the the Large one on the front of the Intake on pass side right by the Fuel Rail.
No Cat would be great, be careful though that you don't loose your backpressure. You will notice a dramatic drop on the lower end but gain on the upper. Need to do other Mod's Like a V8 TB to get more Air into the engine before you let more Air out.
A '98 should have two O2 sensors, One before and 1 after the Cat.
Good Luck,
Shank
