Subject: Of course its the brakes IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dakota, and have already had ball joint and rotor problems with only 24K, the problems first came up at 17K. I now have a thumping noise when I brake at low speeds that comes in and out. I suspect it is happening at higher speeds but is just not discernable. Anyway, the slower I go the slower the interval between this dump, dump, dump noise. It only happens when braking, but I have had the brakes checked out and my mechanic found no problems. Any ideas?

Message: Sounds like warped rotors. Pull them off & take them to a resurfacing shop, Some Autozone's & O' Reilly's do them, They should be able to check them for free. If they are warped see if you can get the stealership to replace them for free. It's always worth a shot but they don't usually stand by the brake system more than 10,000 miles.
See If you can tell if it's the front or the back. If it's the front you should notice a slight jiggle in your steering wheel when it's dump dump dumping.
I have heard of the rear drums warping also. Not sure if it's warp or just bad wear but they end up oval instead of round.
Is there a large amount of brake dust build-up on the rims? If your calipers are sticking the brakes are rubbing, causing rapid wear of the brake pads, dust on the rims and the heat generated warp's the rotors. The only way to check the rear is to pull the drums.
Good Luck,
Shank

Message: I have a 96 and had similair problems when I firts bought my truck, my problem was the rear e-brake cable was stuck on and the drums would heat up, as soon as I touched the brakes it felt like the truck was going into orbit shaking and bumping, anyway a way to check that is to bot down the highway for about half an hour then apply e-brake one/two notches, then jump on the brakes gently at 30 mph or so, just in case it skids, if it shakes worse you will know its the rear, mine has done this again since the first time, apparently the e-brake cable is a sore spot on these trucks.
Hope this helps.
