First check the dash ground behind the right kick panel. Remove the nut and buff the connection with a dremel tool or something like that. A used computer would be far cheaper, but you still have to take it to the dealer first to have the Vin number put in it. The truck won't run without this. Good luck.

The computer just plugs in and on the 98 you need
to have your vin code flashed in or it wont run.

They rarely just go out first thing you need to do
is check all the elec connections and it does
sound like your speed sensor is bad

Forgot to add,

Go to radio shack and get a can of contact cleaner
pysicly unplug all the connections and spray and
reconect them.

I see a lot of trucks with weird probs and the
first thing I do is clean all the connections
than hook up the scanner and monitor the sensor
outputs. just 1 bad connection can cause a lot
of problems, just starting to replace parts is
not a good idea and can be very expensive

Also check all the grounds

Just go to autozone pepboys or one of those places
and get a replacement unit.

I don't remember what year they changed but some
are on the tail shaft of the trans or the
diferential

Just unbolt it put a little grease or oil on the
oring instal it and plug it in and away ya go

I had the same occasional problem on my Jeep. The Stealership fixed it for free. (Doesn't happen very often) The Main Harness coming from the computer in the Fender, the Large Plug that is below the brake booster that hooks to the firewall had moisture in it. Took 15 Min, the Mechanic pulled the batt terminal, pulled the plug, gave it a heavy coating of WD-40 and then used high pressure air to blow out all the excess. Re-plugged it and sprayed it down with silicone spray and it worked ever since.

I also agree that it sounds like a bad connection And/Or the speed sensor. Not sure if '98 is electric speedo or cable, Look on the rear of your tranny just before the driveshaft, there will be a module sticking out the side with either an elect plug or your Speedo cable. That's the critter, try it.

Good Luck,
Shank
