Message: Yes most caps have the #1 marked however if the
dist gear has ben removed and reinstalled in the
wrong posistion it could be anywhere.
Just put the vibration damper on TDC compresion
stroke and the rotor will point at #1 if its
opoisite turn the motor all the way around again
to TDC the cam turns half as fast as the crank
a 2 to 1 ratio

Message: Also the pick-up plate will have a #1 Cyl stamped on it. With the engine at TDC the rotor should point directly over the #1 Cyl stamp.
If the distributor was pulled out completely it may have pulled up on the Oil Pump drive gear and when shoved back down may not have been in the right position when the teeth lined back up with the cam. With the gear fully seated and the #1 Piston TDC looking down the distributor hole the slot should point straight front to rear of the vehicle. when the distrubutor is inserted the rotor button should point to the pass side of the vehicle directly over the pick-up plate #1 stamp.
Hopefully this didn't confuse you. It's just a lil more in-depth to the correct answer larry gave above.
