Subject: Oil filter question for larry? IP: Logged
Message: I noticed on a earlier post you said to use a 318 V8 oil filter on a 3.9L and it will flow better. I just would like to make sure it will fit. I have a 95 Dodge Ram with the 3.9. could you tell me if this will work?
Thanks, Chop

Message: Yes same base on the filters,
What I run on my 95 3.9 and use on all the trucks
is a Wix or car quest premium filter listed for
the older 318 get one for an 88 318 they have
more capasity than the shorties they list.
# 85068 is the carquest this is the filter I
use on all the dodge trucks
What you will notice is better oil presure

Message: Thanks, I am going to get one today. My oil presure is a little below 40 right now but it does change time to time. Also when you first give it some gas the presure goes down some then comes back up above 40. I just take it this may be normal.

Message: I would not put to much faith in the factory
guages as far as acuracy. when I turn my park
lights on all my guages read higher.
But still a lot better than a light that comes on
below 7 to 10 pounds presure.
When I first went to synthetic oil I did not do
the flush and the first filter pluged in 1000
miles, the second made 2000 but now I run 6000
on a filter with the synthetic and it stays clean
the synthetic will clean any deposites out of
your motor.
I would recomend anyone going to syn to use the
flush first.
Let us know how the bigger filter works out for ya
I am sure you will be pleased with the resaults
a lot of customers trucks I put them on ask me
why there oil presure is better what did I do.
Just a better quility filter with more surface
area for better flow and it will hold more dirt
All were very pleased with the resaults

Message: Isn't that funny, my gauges read a little higher when I turn on my lights as well! Thought I was just my truck. I replaced the oil pressure sending unit about 2 months ago. After installing the new unit it read pretty high, now more normal (now reads middle of the gauge or a little higher, depending on RPM). Is there some sort of 'break in period' with a new op sending unit?

Message: On the sensor no, you could try half a dozen
sending units and they all will read just a little
diff.
Same with the IAT's if you take 2 of them let them
sit at room temp for a few hours and check them
with a digatal volt meter you will see they are
slightly diff.
The 2 I have on my truck right now read 15 degrees
differance in temp.
All they are is a variable resistor that changes
resistance with heat.

Message: Yes & No. Currently yes they do but the older 318's & 360's used a larger filter. Same size mounting surface but a larger (taller) filter. Put the 2 side by side and the older filter is approx 1" longer than the current filter and there shouldn't be a clearance problem either.

Message: Yes the filter will fit your 98 & 02 it will fit
any mag engine 3.9 5.2 5.9 all the same base as
the older 318 which ran a bigger filter and more
capasity is always better
Napa and carquest filters are made by Wix a good
filter just stay away from the frams
Ford or motocraft FL1 is even longer if you have
the room
The stock filter holds about 1/2 Qt the longer
318 about 3/4 the long ford FL1 almost a whole Qt
Engine flush
1 can of Amsoil flush add to old oil, run motor
20 min drain change oil and filter

Message: I know this is a Dakota site, but many of us Dakota owners have other DC products: the "larger filter" trick works on many other Chrysler & Jeep products. The K cars, the LH cars, the later Jeep 4.0 engine (the earlier used metric threads) Basically, anything that uses a AC Delco PF13 or a Fram PH16 can use the larger filter (Motorcraft PF2, Delco PF2, Fram PH8)

Message: I dont know if this helps anyone at this point, but I work at Jiffy Lube and we use a Milegaurd MO16 on the 3.9/5.2 not to mention Straight 6 jeeps and even mitsubishi eclipses. That little filter can do anything.

Message: Larry,
I'm going fully synthic on my 2000 V6 - 39,000mi - changed oil every 3,000 miles.
I just put in my order for amsoil on Friday so I don't want to order again for the flush.
First - do I really need to flush? Majority of my driving has been highway.
What other product can I buy instead of the Amsoil flush?

Message: No flush needed. I did the swap with my Dak at 100,000 miles and did not flush. The first few changes I did at 2000 miles so the crud that was loosened up got taken out. On a truck with as few miles as yours has I would not even think twice about just dumping it in and going stright with the extened oil change.

Message: I was also wondering about the K&N oil filters.I am interested in going to a K&N If they are a good filter.I want the filter that has the valve in it & K&N does. Also,if you use a larger filter,is more oil required to make up for what the filter will hold.Dumass question I know, but anyway.
All replies are appreciated.

| Oil filter question - Amsoil Oversized Filter IP: Logged
Message:
For those who are not mechanics:
The true meaning of "oversized" --- has little to do with "can size", and everything to do with "total media area" --- what is inside the can. A manufacturer might be able to increase their media area by 25% or more simply by doing some research, with no increase in the can size.
Warning: Believe it or not, some manufacturers use the same media in all size filters. Some manufacturers "cram" additional media into smaller cans so that they can advertise "more media" -- and in the filters where they include MORE media --- in many cases they are MORE restrictive. Be Aware!
Both Filtration and Flow are VERY important!
