Message: I have a 97 dakota sport with a 3.9L with a bad missfire, I replaced the plugs, wires, dist cap, dodge dealer checked the fuel pump pressure and said it was erratic so I replaced it, I replaced the whole unit on the intake that houses the idle air and two other sensors, I did a copression test and got approx 150 on all cylinders, I took it to a dodge dealer and had the injecters cleaned. I replaced the catylic converter, and I still have a missfire and no power. can any one help I normally don't go to the net for automotive help , but I still have the same problem I started with.when I hook up the Snap-on scanner and disable any one of the injectors the engine smooths out and runs fine. The dodge dealer says it's not a cpu problem Can someone offer some suggestions that might help! Last week the(snap-on) scanner said there was a misfire on #5, this week it says #6

Message: I just bought a '93 with same problem. I'm thinking a cracked head between intake/exhaust port. It runs fine until it warms up then starts the sputtering/backfiring. Doing a head job 2morrow when the gaskets arrive.
Try pulling the Crank sensor out and cleaning the tip, often there is metal debris on the magnetic tip causing false signals. What about timing? can you still adjust it in '97? It has to be within +/- 5 degrees to run. I'm sure you have done this but try re-setting the computer/
Hope this helps,
Shank
