Does anyone know of a coolant or block warmer that can be easily installed on a '97 3.9L Dakota? The weather has turned cooler and in the next couple months it will be down right cold (I'm in Michigan). I have to take my 9 month old son to daycare three days per week and I don't want to strap him into a cold vehicle. This morning I let the truck idle for about 10 minutes to warm up but this is a waste of fuel (not that the little buy isn't worth it). I just want to know what is available.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've got two choices for you. Part # 4798276ac is the O.E block heater that is available from your local dodge dealer for 23.70 or KATZ makes a heater that goes in your lower heater hose (much easier to install) part# 14700 for about 30.00 at a parts store. Hope this helps

Hey Partsguy,
Is the OEM part difficult to install? I'm pretty handy under the hood but I've never undertaken something like removing the freeze plug to install a block heater. What would you recommend I look out for? Any precautions?

Also, which heater is better? I would think that the OEM part would perform better as it is immersed in the coolant that is in the engine. Would I see much of a performance degradation on the KATZ heater due to its location in the lower heater hose?

Thanks for the input.

I've never installed one in the block but I would imagine it wouldn't be any harder than replacing a freeze plug. Not my idea of fun. I have had a Katz heater, it was easy to install, just drain the coolant, cut a section of the lower hose and insert the heater into the two sides and secure with a couple of hose clamps. As far as performance let me put it this way, I was living in Marquette Mi. at the time and the car was outside all night long every night. When I would get up in the morning (-30 sometimes) I would have instant heat.

There is even a better way to go and not mess
around with any coolant.

Cant remember the name off hand but its a 6X6
square pad, All you do is clean the bottom of
your oil pan and stick this thing on with the
silocon they come with and it heats your
oil and motor from the bottom up and they work
great.

I have installed about 6 so far and as you will
also probably think they will fall of but have
not lost 1 yet. 1 Guy riped the cord right off
4 wheeling but the pad remained intact and had to
solder the wires back on.
