Subject: Tranny slip when turn left...
IP: Logged

Message:
I know this sounds crazy, but my tranny on my 3.9 V6 '00
dakota slips when I turn left. It seems like 1st to second
and possibly even 2nd to 3rd. It absolutely does not do it
from a stop when going straight or right, but if I turn left it
slips every time. Does it sound like a sensor or something?
My fluid is fine. My dak has 60,000 miles on it and I have
changed the filter and fluid before. I really, really don't
want to get a new tranny. Any tips are welcome.

That is very strange.

Drop a shift kit in and it will increase presure
make the shifts firmer and the trans will build
less heat because all the smoth shift does is slip
the clutcs and make heat

I just wonder if the filter fell of in the pan
and while turning left the fluid is forced to
1 side and its not picking it up.

When it was changed maybe it was not tightnd
and fell of

Thanks for the advice; I am going to have it changed again and see if there is anything obvious. It is so weird, I mean it really slips bad, but ONLY when turning left. The good thing to me, is that sounds like it is something other than the mechanics of the tranny, otherwise it would be doing it all of the time right?

Just throwing out a thought but maybe it could be the axle. When you turn, power is switched to one side. Perhaps there is something wrong on one half of your axle.

That is definetely a thought to consider. I had not thought of it. I guess it would feel similar to a slip. Either way, I guess I'm going to have to take it in. Would you take it to a dealer or a tranny/axle shop? I'm so pissed at the dealers and it seems like it would be so expensive. Ever since I've bought this truck (brand new) I've had rotor problems, heater core went out, and now tranny or axle...All of which were not covered. I took my truck in for all of these things when it was under warranty and they could not find anything wrong. Well they found something wrong with the rotors, however those aren't covered after 12,000 miles. Like they are going to warp in less than that. Then about after 1,000 miles after my warranty is up...POP antifreeze in my cab. I also took it in for the tranny slip and they charged me 60 bucks to look at. Of course when they drove it, nothing happened. Now it does it every turn. So I've about had it. I've spent about 2500 bucks out of pocket to keep this truck for 3 years. And I'm not including maintanence or regular things. That would bring it up to about 4 or 5 g's. Anyway I'm done crying. If anyone has advice on what type of actions I should take for this tranny/axle problem; I'm all ears, or keys. KK

You can check this yourself and probably needs to be done anyway:

Pull the rear diff cover and check for broken parts or metal chunks in the bottom. There is a magnet on the cover and normal wear & tear will have a hefty layer of metallic sludge built up on it. Clean all out thouroughly and refill w/Synthetic fluid. Any metal chunks are BAD!

I'm with Blue on this 1, sounds more like rear end than tranny.

If this doesn't work pull the tranny pan and make sure your filter was tight. Sinceyouus... Sice you was already in there go ahead and change the filter. It never hurts to change it again.

Good Luck,
Shank
