Message: I am thinking along the lines of swapping sides
on the headers flipping them upside down with a
small turbo on each running through an intercooler
that sits out in the grill and than back to
the TB
A cone filter intake on each down by the front

both exh pipes down to hook back into the factory

I am still dreaming this thing up so please do
not ask to many questions but any comments I
would appreciate.
I already have a Nordask analog air fuel gauge
on a seporate O2 on my truck so I can monitor
the ratio and 6 to 8 pound boost around 2000 rpm
to add some excellent low end

Message: Larry, since you're a fabricator, why don't you make a set of custom turbo headers? I on't think the very thin wall (read cheap) stock manifolds will stand up to the abuse of turbocharging for very long, unless you have a good supply of those.

Message: I probably way over my head here but isn't it the exhaust gases that spin the turbines adding boost to the intake manifold? How would that add alot of stress on the stock manifolds unless maybe you had too much backpressure? I would also think that cast iron would be rather stong wouldn't it? Do you fabricate Larry?

project.
I have acces to a 100 inch travel kerny and treker
VB4 CNC and could write a program, mill out some
flanges and bend my own pipes and weld up a
custom set.
I have a mandrel bending machine I use to make
custom pipes.
Than I could put the turbo's anywhere I want them
I am thinking like next summer building this for
my truck,

hey what year grand national did you get the turbo
from that you used.
I have a good friend who owns a salvage yard maybe
I could get 2 of those 2 waistgates or do you
think I could use 1 with a turbo city dial a boost
adjuster to tune the units
Dam I should have kept my Apexi controler I will
bet money I will need something to adjust my fuel
with 2 turbos blasting away.
Did you happen to get any dyno runs with your
turbo or seat of the paints estamite of the gain.
Checking out the prices this project looks like
just for the turbos around $3000 good thing all
my labor is free.
I think I am going to start rounding up the parts
and put my 4.0 stroker for my 90 on hold this
sounds like more fun.
I can just put my old lady up for sale on Ebay
but I don't know if I would get enough money to
cover the project.
I am just about dead set on this right now

Message: the turbo i used was off of a buick regal... not the GN or GNX. It was a TB0301. It worked and it worked well but probably couldnt push more than 10-11 lbs of boost to a 3.9. Running the wastegates isnt really that hard to do. If you use to internal, just hook them up to the appropriate places (compressor housing and vacuum source), just be sure they have the same rated spring in it. You could also use one of those boost controller with an internal or external, but i have no experience with em.
I never got it to the dyno and the one time i went to the track the tranny busted so all i can give you is races on the street.
absolutely killed a RT. Talked to the kid and he had normal bolt ons.. .exhaust, intake and such.
raced a LT1 camaro and beat it but i dont know anything about his car.
and i raced a 1996 mustang GT (4.6) with cold air induction, short throw shifter, ram air hood, headers, X-pipe, dual exhaust (unsure of brand, but LOUD), 3.73 gears. I beat him but not by much.
If i were to guess, i would say very low 14s to high 13s when everything was running good (wasnt often).
If, i can, i will see if i can find my old turbo manifold and send you some pix if you would be interested.

Message: Ya I would like to see some pics to see how
you had it plumbed up
I was thinking just off to the side of the valve
covers above the fender well that would give me
plenty of room to run the exh back to the y pipe
Than I will run out to the grill and back through
an intercooler.
Did you run a cooler.
The only turbo I ever played with was an old 63
chevy 283 when I lived in milwaukee 30 years ago
we fabed 1 up and man did that baby fly and the
gas milage was out of this world, we had a 10 gal
fuel cell in the trunk and at about 125 130 mph
we would not have enough fuel presure but that
was plenty fast for a couple 16 year old kids.
We just welded up a square box to inclse the 2bl
carb and fliped the exh manifolds over and the
turbo sat right in front of the box

Message: i'll get you some pix by the end of the day. I wanted to put the turbo by the side of the motor but because of the weird angle on the outlet turbine, i had to put it in the corner right behind the upper radiator hose.

Message: sorry larry... i am a day late
no as you can see i used all mandrel bend pieces except for the turn down pipe... ran out and didnt want to wait to get more in so i just went to autozone and bought some crap. The header was 1 3/4" plumbing but was kinda "big". I just made a collector with it and welded a 3" collector ring to it and used a 3" to 2.5" reducer to go to the turbo. Right after the reducer is where the plumbing from the other header hits at about a 40 degree angle and then curves straight up to the turbo. Not the best but when your budget is $500... you do what you can. The crossover pipe was 2.25" and the exhaust was 2.5"

Message: COOL,
You ran that baby with no cooler from the looks
of it.
Maybe I will not need an intercooler, or I could
run the intakes from both turbo's from the grill
my hood scoop would just be there to cool the
compartment.
I am going to see what size turbonetics recommends
with a twin set up.
My goal was 300 hp at the rear wheels but I never
made that even after all the money I dropped in
the motor only 267 estimating low if I would get
a 20% increase that would put me at 320 something
that would have been easily attainable with a 318
but I love these 6 cyls and I will get there yet
Thanks for all your imput, this is going to be a very
fun project and I am going to start rounding up all
the parts.
Man my old lady is going to kill me if she finds
out about this one, she was not to happy about
the $6000 I already spent on this truck I will
just tell her my trans blew or something because
she will grill me as to why I am not driving my Dak
Oh well the hemi truck needs some miles put on
it, only 6000 so far but I already have the S/C
ordered from Kenny bell as soon as he's done
with the tuning he will be shipping me one of
the first ones, over 500hp right now on his
dyno test and still working out some bugs with the
setup.

But what else does a old retired guy have to do
but play with his trucks just like a little boy

Message: yeah, i didnt have an intercooler on it but i did have one. I purchased a Spearco and it was the correct size to fit right behind the valance but my wife wrecked her car before i got it on. At that point i had to make my truck a little more driver friendly and let her drive it. You really wont need an intercooler... it would just make more power if you had one.

Check out turbonetics.com and give em a call. They could tell you the exact size you would need. I think that a good T04B would work wonders and i know that www.turbocity.com use to sell brand new ones for about $400... which is a really good deal.

Message: I have contacted turbonetics and am waiting for
them to get back to me. On what size and setup
would work best for me.
The reason I wanted twin turbos was so one could
spool up at lower rpm and the second later so
I would gain across the entire rpm range.
I have called Art I went to high school with
him and he owns the biggest salvage yard in this
area and see what he has in his yard. waiting
for him to call back also he is checking to see
what he has
I could get the turbos from him for $50 each
What I could do if a lot of people are interested
in this is build a fixture to weld up the exh to
mount the turbo on so all you would need to do
is find the rest of the parts and bolt it together
We are building a new shop right now it will be
located about 1500 feet from my back door, the
polls are in the ground but will not have the
slab pored until next spring. 36 wide by 72 long
with the downdraft paint booth on one end and the
mech shop on the other.
The Dodge trucks is all I work on these days all
the restoration work is done by my brother and
2 nephews there are just 4 of us in the shop
All B Body Mopar's very rarely will you see
a chevy or a ford in our shop. We also do
all the paint work for a local off road racing team
that runs all dodge trucks
With in the floor radiant heat the building we
are in now cost $450 per month to heat
We are moving out of the building we are now
leasing and plan on being in the new shop next
summer
