Subject: Tranny questions(Larry?) IP: Logged
Message: on a 00Dak 3.9 automatic, all my local tranny guys are saying to use lubeguard "black" with regular mercon/dexron fluid, instead of using ATF+3. also, they recommend removing the check valve from the cooler lines, saying it can cause reduction of cooler efficiency due to restricting the flow. the label on lubeguard states that it fortifies the mercon with highly modified friction reducers, giving it the same or better protection than +3or+4 fluids...anyone know anything about this potion? anyone have any do's or donts for the check valve?

Message: forgot, they say the check valve was installed due to earlier Daks having a problem with the fluid draining back to the pan, causing trans to not work right when cold.

Message: Scott,
Mopar recomends +4 in the older tranies also.
The +3 was a parcial synthetic and the +4 is all
synthetic now.
I would not remove the check valve it is there
for a reason. Some of the additives do help but
if your trans is in good condition there is no
reason to use them.
I have been using the Amsoil universal synthetic
in all the tranies when I do fluid and filter
changes and have had no complaints people and
myself have noticed that they operate smother
with the Amsoil
Use Amsoil or the +4 they are both about the same
price so the choice is yours.
Redline is also a good fluid
All the aditives are is a micro lube that will
help sticky valves and clutch packs that hang up
not needed in a good trans

If you have followed the Chrysler transmission problems (and their attempts to correct them) you may recall that they went from the ATF+/MS-7176B fluid to the current ATF+4 in the span of about 10 years. Rather than recall a bunch of transmissions that had "shuddering" problems, they worked with various friction modifiers in an attempt to find a chemical solution. It almost seemed like they were taking a hit or miss approach. From personal experience I can tell you the latest ATF+4 fluid has largely solved the shuddering issue. This shuddering is due to a very rapid "stick/slip" condition as the clutch plates begin to engage. It typically occurs as the transmission is upshifting from 3rd to 4th under light to medium throttle settings @ 35-45 mph. The key to solving it is tailoring the AFT properties to work correctly in the transition phase from slipping to complete clutch lockup.

AMSOIL Synthetic Universal ATF
Recommended for applications requiring the following specifications:
Chrysler ATF+, ATF+2, ATF+3, ATF+4
AMSOIL synthetic automatic transmission fluid is a universal ATF designed to exceed nearly all foreign and domestic performance requirements. It improves fuel efficiency, reduces transmission temperatures by 20 to 50 degrees F and increases transmission life. Provides unsurpassed thermal stability and at least 3 times the life of conventional ATFs. Delivers maximum protection for towing and other severe-duty applications. Formulated with synthetic basestocks and the top-of-the-line additive package, AMSOIL ATF provides top performance, durability & efficiency.
Key Benefits to You:
Cleaner transmission components, More efficient power transfer, Lower Transmission temperatures, Dramatically less transmission wear, Smoother cold temperature operation, Long drain intervals, Compatible Applications: Nearly all passenger cars (foreign & domestic), Nearly all light duty trucks (including Dodge Dakotas).
--------------------------------------------------
AMSOIL SYNTHETIC UNIVERSAL ATF & AMSOIL ATF+4
Amsoil offered a second synthetic ATF, specifically for the ATF+4 applications, about four years ago. However it was only on the market for about a year before they were able to incorporate the unique friction modifier chemistry into the universal ATF. At that time, they discontinued this second ATF product.
There a number of folks who run Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF Dakota's, Dodge diesel pickups, "LH" sedans like the Concorde and Dodge minivans, etc. It works just fine.
--------------------------------------------------
Note, some recent D/C transmissions are WEAK - this is direct input from service guys.

Yes it will work fine with the remaining fluid.
You will only get about 50% 6 quarts with a fluid
and filter change
As steven shows you above some fluids are a blend
of both and there is no harm doing this some
people mix 50/50 on purpose to gain the benifit
of sythetic for less money

Scott,
I guess I was typing when you asked your question, and thanks Larry for answering it.
Amsoil's Synthetic Universal ATF is 100% compatible with Mopar ATF so you would have no problem mixing. But why would you use Amsoil ATF when just dropping the pan? IMHO, That defeats the purpose of switching to synthetic. Since you're dropping the pan you're only dumping 50% of your fluid so when you top it off with Amsoil it's just gonna mix in with the old fluid and you won't get the full benefits of Synthetic ATF. I would suggest that you do a complete flush when switching to Amsoil Synthetic Universal Synthetic ATF.

Let me take a moment to thank you both for your input.the both of you seem to have immense knowledge, and i for one, do appreciate your taking the time to answer everything passed your way.myself being in management for a retail parts company (not the "Zone") i know how frustrating it is to answer the same q's over and over again. Truly, i dont claim to know all, and i have found the knowledge that the two of you share with the masses on this forum very beneficial. thanks again guys..glad to have your help.

Chrysler used to recomend +3 but now they recomend
+4 where the 3 was used.
I would also be pissed if they used a fluid that
was not recomended for thr trans.
The shift kit will help a lot and is not that
hard to install just takes time and is messy
the TransGo kit even comes with a VHS vidio to
watch

Message: Since i don't have a lift I hate changing my own tansmission fluid and filter. Now after reading this on the board I guess I am going to have to tough it out. On my last change the station put in Costal Dextrom lll. When I asked, they said that was what it was susposed to have. So much for that. Larry - Thanks for your sugestion on getting rid of the rattle. When I pulled the sway bar off I found that the upper bushing on the passenger side was shot. Napa did not have any in stock so I replaced the top bushings on each side with bushings and washers that came off of the front shocks when I changed them. Seems to work fine but I guess that I will install the link kit when I get time.

If you've ever allowed anyone to use GM or Ford fluid in your Dakota, no amount of snake oil in the world can fix that. It's rebuild time.
