REcently the frickin' engine light popped up for no damn reason. I take anal care of this truck and now its idling high intermittently. I replaced the PCV valve because it was knocking louder than normal. Do you have to disconnect the battery to reset dash lights? Or if I fixed the problem will the computer turn it off?

First you should check the codes and see which
one you have

Just turn the key on and off 3 times than on and
see what codes you get.

You can reset the computer by disconecting the Neg
batt cable go in the truck and turn the key to
start and hold it there for 40 secs than shut it
off and reconect the batt cable.

Almost sounds like your IAC or TPS is acting up
check the codes and need to know what you get and
the year of the truck

Or go to autozone and have them check the codes
and remove them without a hard reset that removes
all learned memory and has to relearn everything
from the stock tables.

If you have solved the prob the light will not
come back on untill it is triped again.

I checked the code online at 0442 which is a small leak in the evaporative purge system. Not sure what that means except perhaps the PCV valve again. Any ideas????

Hi Randall, I work at a dodge dealership, we have seen that light come on for two main reasons. You should check your fuel tank cap. If its not on tight it can set that code or if the cap is bad. An easy way to check the cap is to shake it and see if it rattles. Sometimes we find the cap has rusted inside and small (almost dust) size particles can be rattling inside the cap. Like I said these are two common causes and easy to check out yourself. Good luck

A fancy name for something as simple as a gas
tank vent.

There is also a canistor and selinoid in the
system located on the drivers side near the frame
check the elec conections and hose's.

If you leave the gas cap lose or off you will get
the code, pr as parts guy said it could be as
simple as the cap itself

Thanks for the advise guys...I checked the cap, found it WAS a little loose, but my hopes dissappeared to STILL see that engine light on. I looked in the hood to find disconnected hoses/electrical connectors but have had no luck. J and J, Is that canistor near the headlight? Parts Guy, should the cap still have some play when turned to click? Thanks for any help with this annoying problem..

Yes that's it the charcoal canistor to control gas
fumes entering the atmosphere.

And there is also a selinoid almost under the
drivers feet which is part of that system and
is well known for bad coraded conections and
getting the code.

Check these things before you start replacing
parts you may not need

Randall, if I was you, I would go down to your local Autozone, ask them to read the codes with an OBDII scanner and they will be able to tell you what is making the light come on. If they have half a brain they should be able to give you a few ideas what it may be. Also, while you are there get a new gas cap (a whole $5.49)

I just wanted to thank everyone for helping. It turned out to be that stupid gas cap after all. It rusted away internally and with a replacement the engine light was no more....although the AutoZone dudes had no idea. I had to "suggest" a gas cap as a remedy.
