Subject: v8 or f&b? Larry?? IP: Logged
Message: Money aside, which would I be better off with. I've already shaved down my stock v6 TB and felt a good difference there. I notice the F&B is the same size bore, just a better flowing version. If I bought a v8 TB and polished it up myself, would that be better then the F&B?

Message: No because of the step from the 50mm plates to your
manifold that is 48mm that is what causes the low
end loss.
If you mod it in any way the low end loss will
get worse.
The F&B is the best you can get, it was designed
flow tested and dyno tested to provide the best
flow while maintaining velocity. For the V6
There is absolutely no low end loss it actually offers
better low end and throttle response.
On dyno tests it also shows more torque at the rear
wheels than the V8 with no loss at all.
It is matched to the 48mm bores in your manifold.
The fastman Dan 46mm is also a better choice than a V8
again no low end loss but a gain in low end and
throttle response.
The V8 is just the most economical way to go, you
sacrifice just a little low end but gain everywhere
else
With either aftermarket body there is also no
hassle of changing the cable, Fastman Dan or
Bruce from F&B will put the linkage on that you
need no screwing around with the cable
I would recommend either the fastman or F&B all
day long over the V8 but if money is tight the
V8 is the cheap alternative.

Message: good question timG
i was gonna ask the same thing my self!
i would think if you just port matched the TB to the intake everything would match up and things would work great.
just my 2 cents though, anyone know for sure what kind of effect this would have?

Message: On a V6 body yes remove the air horns and torque
steps.
The V6 came with anything from 42 to 46mm and
modding them helps a lot.
If you open up the manifold and put a 50mm body
on you will lose to much velocoty and low end
there is nothing to be gained by doing that unless
you are running a S/C or a turbo.
Cut the air horns and remove the steps from your
V6 body and you will notice better off idle
response and more power accros the entire rpm
band
But the 50mm is just to much for the V6

No I am not a pre mag, I have a 95 V6 mag.
48mm F&B, moded intake ported and matched heads
stroker crank H-Beam rods and a set of Keith Black
custom 10 to 1 pistons
custom ground cam 268/272 with a .484 lift
with the 1.7 crower rollers
MSD ignition, FMS injectors, mopar PCM also
running 3 more degree's advance from a fabricated
crank sensor mount, I can go 10 but not with the
mopar PCM
JBA headers mandrel 2.5 y pipe no cat and a dynomax
17748 and factory 2.5 tail
1600 rpm stall converter and 3.91 sure grip rear
And more, I have been building hi perf motors
for over 30 years and stuck $6000 in this V6
It is no super fast racer but a lot of fun to drive. I love this truck and have decided to
build me a collection of Daks, 90 95 and 00
will be my trucks.

i want to remove these from my stock TB and see if i get any gains, probably polish it up when i have it off too.
can you describe to me exactually im gonna want to remove or cut off?
can it be done with a rotozip?
thanks

Message: I have a rotozip and a dremel. I used my father in laws pneumatic grinder and it worked great. If you feel comfortable using the rotozip then go for it, but it's a great excuse to invest 35 bucks into a dremel. If you just take it off and look at it, it should be plain what things aren't necessary. Anything that disrupts the flow of air should go. I even went as far as to thin out and round off the plates.

Message: No bolting on a set of headers before doing the
intake you will see no benifit.
With a bigger TB you will than gain from headers
if you have the V8 TB yes do the headers because
you have more flow you don't need an aftermarket
body
Here is one of my older posts with a mod 42mm TB
so you can see what you need to do.
They will flow more with the steps and air horns
removed and will only cost you your time. And
its very noticeable on off idle and low end
response

We have a bunch of great guys around here that know there stuff like Intense39 (Greg) that did the turbo and Wally that works at dodge. What kinda results did the cam after the 1.7s yield. So what's your point here.
Yes I have my V6 stroked,
Yes I had a custom ground cam made to run with the
1.7's the after market cams have to much lift to
run with the 1.7's and the valve springs would
bind
I could not tell you the exact HP from the cam
because I did it with lots of other mods while
I was installing the crank, rods and pistons.
An educated guess would be 20 to 25 HP from the
cam set up

Message: Alright Larry I know I repeat alot of my question but I just want to be sure. So if I stick with my v8 TB and spend the 250.00 + on some headers, I will see the better performance from the V8 TB rather than a 46mm TB?
