Subject: Will the knock ever stop? IP: Logged
Message: I bought my 93 Dakota about 8 months ago. It has 146,000 miles on it. (V6, auto, 4x4) It knocked from the first day that I owned it. Since then, I have gradually improved it, but I can't get rid of it.
I replaced the belly pan gasket and the belly pan with an aluminum billet pan and new gasket. I have replaced the spark plugs and gapped them at .035 and .040 just to test. (Currently Champion, but there were Autolites in it when I bought it.) I replaced the spark plug wires, distributor cap, and ignition rotor, and it ran better after these replacements and knocks less, but it isn't gone.
I switched from 87 octane to 89 octane and the knock/ping is less, but it is still there for sure.
What else can I do to fix this?

Message: Just a question. Does it knock all the time? The timming chains are known to rattle/knock even at an idle. Dodge came out with a timming chain tensioner to fix this. Hope this helps

Message: Last night I bought some Autoline 3923 Platinums. (They were out of regulars.) I gapped them to 0.045" and installed them, and I believe that there is more knock now than with the Champion RN12YC plugs gapped at 0.040". (I also did the coil wire reroute, so it is between the valve cover and the intake manifold now.)
It knocks all the time. I can't really hear it above 2500 rpm, but below that, it knocks all the time. It doesn't miss though.
Is it time for a timing chain and/or tensioner? Where is the best place to get chain, gears and tensioner? (I'm sure that this has been answered on here many times...)

Message: Is it piston ping detanation or just an outright
knock.
You may have a bad O2 or one of your sensors could
be off but you need a digital volt meter to check
them. A low reading IAT or Temp sensor changes the
timing
At 146,000 I would think about replacing the chain
anyway they like to go out between 150 250,000
The plugs should be running a light tan color. If
not there is something not right.

Message: It reminds me of the wrist pin knock that I heard on my 88 Reliant, but it is about 10 times worse, and it happens whether I'm at idle or at wide open throttle. (of course I hardly ever run wide open!)
The Champion RN12Y plugs that I just removed were gray. They didn't look bad to me, and they aren't fouled.
I have an analog volt meter. I've checked the resistance of the temp sensor on the intake manifold and it was in spec according the table that you posted last week, Larry.
I'm not getting any error codes.
