Subject: Steering Shaft Question IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1992 Dakota 4x4 with the 3.9L.
I've had the same problem mentioned here with my starter doing the click, click, clik start thing. The local dodge dealersip told me it was the "starter contacts" in the solenoid. I decided to do the work myself, and remove the started/solenoid unit to work on it. My Haynes manual said to disconnect the "steering shaft" to get at the starter from above, and I can't get at the starter from below becasue of the front differential. But I can' get the steering shaft apart. I removed a pin and clip from the shaft and it slid a little in each direction when tapped, but I can't get it apart to to get at the starter!
Anyone have any suggestions for disconnectiong the steering shaft (Like which direction it slides?)
Thanks,
Don

Message: Unbolt the u-joint thats on the steering box, unbolt the steering shaft (inside the cab) and unbolt the bearing where it goes through the floor. Then it will slide enough to come out. Lock the steering wheel in place too so you dont mess up the clock spring alignment.

Message: Thanks TimG,
I thought the U-joints were not bolted, but rather had pressed pins through the joints?
I looked at it and I couldn't unbolt anything at the joint itself. Maybe I'll take another look at it. Do you have a 92 Dakota too?
Thanks,
Don

Message: Mine is a 1997 4x4, theres a bolt on the u-joint side closest to the box. It might be different on yours though. I have a 95 but its a 2wd it may be different also. is yours a rack or a stering box ?
