Subject: A/C Compressor Failure IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 3.9 V6 Dakota. The A/C Compressor recently died and I dont have enough money to replace it. Since I hardly use the A/C anyways I decided that it would be best and cheaper to simply put on a smaller belt and by pass the compressor all together. I brought it to the dealer and they ordered the smaller belt and here is where my problem comes in. The belt will not fit and they are telling me that on a non a/c dakota that the compressor can not simply be by-passed. The belt is the right one (i made them check it twice) but it will not fit around the system. They say a different idler pully needs to be installed and removal of the shot compressor. However according to everything i've read, it seems to me that the smaller belt should be able to simply by-pass the compressor without having to mess around with anything else. I have the gut feeling im getting screwed. My question is when converting an a/c dakota to a non a/c dakota by switching to a smaller belt, do you need to do anything else other then change belts?

Message: i had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday, i went to two different places and the belts were the same , about 2 inches too short to bypass the a/c, go back to your dealer , they can order belts any length they need, the way the part numbers are represents the lenght of the belt so get them to order one a little longer than the one you tried my chrysler guy is getting me one this week, let me know if you have trouble and i will get you the part number..

Message: Hey do you think you could send me what the part number is anyway? I still feel like im getting screwed by the dealer, so the more info i walk in with tomorrow the better off ill be. Just in case they say i need to start changing the geometry of the serpentine system, it would be nice to be able to tell them that a such and such part will work fine. Thanks!
