Message: Thanks for maintaining this website. I could't recall the firing order or cylinder numerical designation for my 1988 3.9. Boys and I have driven the wheels off this truck. Second transmision, Third rearend, beat all to heck. Head gaskets were leaking compression into the cooling system so I am replacing them. 179, 000 miles on motor. Inside of motor not gunked up, valve stems and guides have almost no wear, valves and seats need only lapping, and didn't really need that. These motors really are almost bullet proof. Thanks again for your website. Ray

Message: my dodge dakota 1991 has a new distributor cap, coil, wires and rotor cap. it starts but runs really rough, and backfires when I give it gas. what could cause this problem. it has 177,000 + miles. mostly highway. i have changed the oil every 3000-6000 miles faithfully. I have checked the firing oreder and it is correct.

i'm guessing tbi motor?
have you checked the crank sensor?
what you described sounds like a timing issue
2 things that come to mind
crank sensor and/or slipped timing chain

I agree with WELL sounds like a timing issue. does your timing chain chatter?

I sure as hell wont do it
I go 2500 change the filter top it off
and another 2500 M-1
155,000 later
still runs like the day I bought it

Message: no spark "to" distributor or "from" distributor....cause if there is noting from the distributor try replaceing the rotor and cap... if their is no spark or enough amperage going to the distributor you need to probe the connection before the coil with a voltmeter. you should have about 12.6 volts. if you have less it is more than likely due to high resistance that consumes voltage.(ex. corrosion, lose wire, or bad connection.) and if you have less voltage your coil does not have enough electrical pressure (voltage) so therefore it will not multiply amperage as its designed so it wont have enough to create spark....so therefore it looks like you have some testing to due and if you have any questions feel free to post. it will notify my email when you post and i will try to get back to you.

Message: I pulled an engine (3.9 v6) from my 2000 dakota. I put a used engine in there and Now it turns and wont fire up. I have fuel and spark and no fuses are blown. Thought maybe my firing order was off but according to what Ive read it isnt. Any ideas? I had to use my old distributor as the used engine didnt come with on. I set the no. 1 cylinder to tdc then dropped the distributor in to place. Is this correct?

Message: You did it correctly if you had the rotor pointing to the number one connection on the distributor cap when you put the distributor back in. Check that then, as "well" suggested stated, set the injector sync.

Message: With the engine at TDC on #1, the ignition rotor should be dead-center on a groove machined in the lip of the dist housing at plug wire #1. Your tolerance should be less than the width of the tip of the rotor.

Message: These trucks have an issue with stalling when put into gear.
Mine does it too when it's cold and I'm turning as I shift from
reverse to drive or the opposite. Check the sensors in the
throttle body and maybe give that baby a good cleaning. It's
helped my truck. She has to breath to run like the Beaty she is!
Just my two cents. I'm still trying to smooth out the ride in my
2001 Dakota. Also for those wondering about firing order still,
read through the comments and you'll see it serveral times.

question, when reading the resistant on the spark plug wires,
they're supposed to read how many ohms?
