Subject: check eng. light please help! IP: Logged
Message: check engine light went on about 5 mos. ago but ran fine 4awhile. Now when started cold, engine idles up to 1500rpm and down to 900 rpm (hunting). Also when driving rpms fluctuate up and down when trying to maintain a steady speed. Almost feels like its slipping in and out of lockup but its not I had that professionally checked. Im tired of pooring money into this pit, please help.

Message: my 96 did that. it was a bad temp sensor. then it still did it. turns out it was a bad connector to it. so when the engine got hot the comp. still thought it was cold and kept pouring fuel in it.

Message: I Agree with S. Hardy
Autozone will hook a trouble code scanner to your
truck and retreive all the codes for free.
A great service for Free
The first thing to check on all these trucks is
the electrical connections. just 1 bad connection
on a plug or sensor can give a person a lot of
greif

Message: My brother just bought a 1989 Dodge Dakota Chinook motorhome. He has just begun a long trek going from the west coast to the east coast and hopefully winding up in Canada! He said good-bye to me last night in LA and just now called from Las Vegas. Two lights are going on. He thinks one of them is connected to the air conditioning, and the other one is on because it is alerting him that scheduled maintenance is now due.
Jerry wants to know if there is a way to reset the maintenance light so that he doesn't have to look at it the whole trip.
I told him to not use the air conditioning and see if the other light goes out -- but I guess that's not too easy in the desert heat these days!
I will pass on S. Hardy's and Larry's advice about going to AutoZone to check the electrical connections.
Personally, I think he should sell the damn thing and fly back to Toronto (his home town). The cost of gas for the trip will be more than an airline ticket!
Any words of wisdom from you guys would be very much appreciated.

Message: Sorry ... engine light also on here, which he thought might be connected in some way to the air conditioning, but perhaps not. Is this a common problem with Dakotas? Thought someone might be able to shed some light on the situation, generically speaking.
